The common belief about teaching and learning is that everyone is capable of learning although everyone learns in different ways. Teachers needs to make sure that their methods accommodate all learners. Teachers' philosophy of discipline is to nurture the child's problem solving techniques, social skills, and self-confidence through positive reinforcement, encouragement and modeled behavior.

*The teacher needs to guide leaners and promote positive behaviour in a classroom.
* The teacher has to practice discipline that he/she expects from learners. For example, the teacher must respect learners the way they want to be respected, be o time and always conduct themselves in a professional manner.
*Teachers philosophy is important as it leads to discipline and how a teacher develops learners.

Communicative Approach

It involves meaningful communication whereby the teacher asks learners to find out information and both films used this teaching approach. For example:
* On dead Poem Society, The teacher asks learners to make poem about anything that they feel or see and learners were responsive to that although for some learners it was difficult, at the end this approach worked.
* On freedom writers, the teacher asked learners to write down information about themselves and anything that happens in their lives and they did write about their background and why they behave the way they do. This teaching approach helped the teacher to understand her learners better.

Unorthodox method describes something that goes against the usual ways of doing things. Both teachers from the film used this method. For example:
* On dead poem society the teacher asked learners to tear down their first page of the introduction after reading it and that is an unusual way of doing things.
* On freedom writers, The teacher worked three jobs to buy books that are not part of the curriculum and this is also unusual thing to do.

Relevance in SA context

The philosophy, approaches and methods are irrelevant in the SA context because South Africa has the standard way of doing things. The schools in South Africa strictly follows the curriculum from the department of education and they are guided by the CAPS document as to what should be done and when.
