Period 6/7: Let's Plan a Zoo: the cost of decisions by Jason Costello

Consider the following questions and then formulate a short response to two to three of the questions (definitely want to respond to #4): Did every animal make it into your zoo? If not, explain why some were included and others were not.
Did you add another animal to your zoo?
Would you want to have a zoo with just one animal (multiple enclosures)?
What was the last animal in and out of your zoo? Why? What was the determining factor of inclusion or exclusion?
Now think, what is the point of this activity? It is not to dream about owning a zoo, there is a economic concept to analyze.

Not every animal made it on to our list because we ran out of room to put them. We decided to put the more popular animals in the zoo. We added flamingos to our zoo which were not on the original list. We thought it would be a good idea because most zoos have a popular flamingo attraction. I would not want to have a zoo with just one animal. The last animal in was a giraffe and the last animals out were penguins. We decided to add giraffes because it can be more engaging, with opportunity to feed giraffes lettuce.

We added a flamingo to our zoo. The last animal in our zoo was the giraffe. The last animal out was the penguin, because we wanted to add the giraffe's.The giraffe was the last animal because we were trying to figure out what animals we could put in with the amount of land we had left. The giraffes would also be an engaging attraction for people. A few determining factors were how much land it took up, and if people would like the animal or not. I would not like to have a zoo with just one animal, I think that would be boring.

Not every animal was able to make it into the zoo. This is because land is scarce. Some animals were not included because they were not worth the amount of land they took up. It would not be ideal to have a zoo with just one animal because then the zoo appeals to less audiences. The last animal in was penguins while the first one out was the giraffe. The determining factor was the amount of average required because the penguins needed less space. This explains how the scarcity of something, in this case land, determines value.

A zoo that only has one species inside of it likely will not get a lot of customers as it only appeals to the group of people that really likes that species and not the majority of people that like other species more. The last animal that was added to our zoo was the kangaroo, we included them because they did not need as much space compared to their popularity level. Not every animal made it into our zoo, the animals that took up a lot of space that wouldn't attract many people didn't seem worth it.

No, we would not want to have a zoo with just one animal because not everyone might be interested in that one singular animal.

Not every animal made it into the zoo. We prioritized items that we thought would be popular with the general population and those priced affordably for animals. Yes, we had multiple different animals to appease a larger group of people. No, because if people didn't like that animal, then they wouldn't come or they would leave poor reviews. The last animal in was the Kangaroo because we wanted around 14 acres for animals and 6 for buildings, and to reach this goal Kangaroo was the last animal we needed. We didn't select some of the bigger point animals last because that would go over our 14-6 split. The point of this activity is that we need to prioritize certain things because there are scarce resources. We need to prioritize the things that will help the zoo the most.

Not every animal made it into our zoo. Some were excluded due to limited space. It was simply impractical to include every animal, especially when factoring in the need for profits, and the increased maintenance cost for more animals. We did not include the Elephant for that reason, it takes up too much space and would be too expensive, also lowering our ability to have other structures we can profit off of.

The last animal in was the Kangaroo, and the first out was the Giraffe. The determining factor of inclusion was the lower space requirement, and the lower hypothetical maintenance costs for said animals that were left in or excluded. We also hypothesized the popularity of animals, picking the more popular ones.

The last animal in the zoo were penguins because they have a different kind of habitat that requires more money since they swim and live in colder environments. The last animal out was elephants because they are cool to see but they require a big amount of space in the zoo and are costly to feed and take care of between the actual food and labor. We wouldn't have a zoo with just one animal because different people have different preferences. If there is only one animal, then the amount of people visiting would be made much smaller than it would be if there were lots of animals.

Some animals may require more land and care and play into bigger economic roles when providing for them. The point of the activity is to show how scarcity can play a big role in the value of something. Kangaroos were the last into our zoo for a bigger diversity of animals to attract more people. The last animal out was the aquarium portion of a zoo because we decided that it would be too expensive to maintain, having to feed all of the fish and other aquatic animals. Overall, the determining factor of inclusion/exclusion was the price needed to maintain the animal while also producing a profit.

The point of this activity was to learn the difference between personal wants and wants of the general population. It is also important to learn about the positioning of certain enclosures and stands (snack stand, restaurant) can impact the choices people make and how that can bring more profit to the firm.
