Having been born with the gift of sight we often ignore the importance of visualization in doing maths. However one can study complex mathematical theories including geometry using Nemeth Code.

The credit for this revolutionary learning technique goes to mathematician Abraham Nemeth, who himself was born blind. Initially when he tried to pursue his passion for mathematics, there were virtually no tools for him to learn mathematics. Braille provided him numerals, but not the necessary computational symbols for calculations. How could you display integrals or geometric figures if you had only numerals? His teachers discouraged him from pursuing mathematics and forced him to study psychology. But his wife Florence encouraged him to study maths. She asked, “Wouldn’t you rather be an unemployed mathematician than an unemployed psychologist?”

As a result of Nemeth Code, blind people throughout the world can now pursue careers in math, physics, engineering and other STEM disciplines. Nemeth went on to became a professor in maths at the University of Detroit and taught mathematics to sighted students.
