"I took those balls years ago, now I walk in with this fountain pen" (Miller, pg. 112). The motif of stealing supports the theme of materialism. The motif represents Biff's failures.

The car represents Willy's problems. He cannot control his problems which reflects on hs driving. The car also shows Willy's journey and failure to achieve the American Dream, from his past glory of watching Biff wax the Chevy to his death. Cars show mobility, power, movement, but ironically for Willy, it represents his tiredness, dispair, and decay. Willy is quite literally driving himself to death. (12-14)

The flute is used as a sign for a flashback and where he is and could have been much happier. It is a sign of the life Willy could have had, a life similar to that of his father the flute salesman. “A melody is heard, played upon a flute. It’s is small and fine, telling of grass and trees and the horizon.” Act 1 page 1.

The pen symbolizes corruption of the business world as well as its materialism. The pen shows Biff’s realization to not wanting to be in the same unsatisfying career as Willy

It also symbolizes Biff’s spite because he knows he can’t do anything in life (because he’s fallen so far behind) so he steals to ‘get back’ at those who are preventing him from progressing.

Page references: pg 104,111
By Ediris, Talha, Bilal, Easa, Guled

1. The flashbacks are symbolic to represent the contrast in Willy and biff’s relationship. In the past they both see greatness in each other and they are close. Compare that to the present that has reversed, they see each other as lost potential especially Willy towards Biff.
2. Ben always checking the time is symbolic because we know he is dead in the present, so it represents Ben’s life running out of time.
3. Time is also very important to Willy because he is never content with the present, we see this through him always in flashbacks and his obsession with a bright future. Ex “Dad is never so happy as when he’s looking forward to something.” (Pg. 105)
