         <title>1969- First Boeing 747 takes its first flight.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The first flight happened on February the 9th 1969, followed by an extensive test program.  </p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark> The Boeing 747 made air travel easily accessible to the public by being more spacious and,  it was more affordable for the mass public. This aircraft is one of the most reliable and safest aircraft ever built.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark> The biggest flaws of the 747 was the design of it's fuel tanks because they where vulnerable to explosions caused by static electricity an example of this would be the crash of TWA flight 800 in 1996. </strong></p>]]></description>

         <title>1970 - Concorde</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Concorde was the first passenger carrying commercial plane. The aircraft was built by manufactures in France and The UK. It made it's first crossing on September 26th 1973, it also launched the first scheduled passenger service on January 21st 1976. </p><p> </p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark> The Concorde could reach speeds over two times the speed of sound, it also can reach altitudes up to 60,000 feet. </strong></p><p><br></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark> The engines on the aircraft where very loud and heavy which made taking off difficult.</strong></p>]]></description>

         <title>December 12th 1970 - Rising popularity of package holidays.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Package holidays go back as far as 1841, where the first package holiday was organised by Thomas Cook and they chartered a train from Leicester to Loughborough. However in the 1970s package holidays became more popular due to people enjoying the idea of another person organising their holidays.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark> The freedom of travel to escape the social economic restraints at the time. It was also convenient for someone else to plan the holiday.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark></strong> <strong>International travel was not as common in the 1970s and Smallpox was still a concern up until 1979 so a vaccine was required to travel.</strong></p>]]></description>

         <title>1977 - First high speed rail line in Europe, Florence-Rome railway.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The earliest high-speed railway in Europe was built in Italy, after World War II it was decided that a more efficient railway that was straighter and faster that starts in Florence and ends  in Rome. The project was approved and funded in late 1968 going into 1969, work on the railway started on June 25th 1970 and only opened to the public on February 24th 1977.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark></strong> <strong>The creation of Florence-Rome high-speed railway was a significant milestone for Italy and helped inspire other European countries to start building their own high-speed rail lines.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark></strong> <strong>Recently almost all of the trains where cancelled from Rome's main station, the negatives of a high-speed railway would also be the noise pollution and the burning of fossil fuels.</strong></p>]]></description>

         <title>January 31st 2020 - Brexit.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Brexit was the United Kingdom leaving the EU to better control it's borders and immigration, also to better control the UK economy and to give power back to the citizens to make decisions. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark> Since leaving the EU the UK has experienced more control over the British pound and not having to pay EU contributions. Also the UK has better control over it's own democracy, national waters and borders.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark> The economy has been negatively affected by Brexit, the UK has had £140 billion loss in the economy along with fewer jobs nationwide.</strong></p>]]></description>

         <title>1994 - The Opening of the Channel Tunnel.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The Channel tunnel, also referred to as the "Euro Tunnel" is an underwater train tunnel that connects the coast of southern England to northern France, it also carries cars, vans and passengers. Furthermore from London the trains that run on the Channel Tunnel connect to other nearby European cities such as Paris, Amsterdam, Brussels and Rotterdam.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark></strong> <strong>The Channel Tunnel is a faster more affordable alternative compared to air travel, there also is no custom delays.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark></strong> <strong>Increased security measures have impacted the costs and operations. Passengers must go through an airport-style security checks.</strong></p>]]></description>

         <title>1995 - The Launch of EasyJet.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>EasyJet was founded in 1995 to offer a low-cost airline to Europe as an affordable option for air travel. It's first flight was in November of the same year of it's launch, it flew Luton to Glasgow and finally Edinburgh. Over the next two years easyJet grew rapidly by building a new base and introducing new routes.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark></strong> <strong>The airline prides itself on being low-cost meaning it is more affordable than bigger airlines.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark> EasyJet faces problems with airspace inefficiency. The company has also been accused of greenwash advertising which means the company has made exaggerated claims about the company's commitment to sustainability.</strong></p>]]></description>

         <title>23rd of March 2020 - Covid-19 lockdown.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>Covid-19 is a virus that when a person is infected with it will come down with a fever, other recognisable symptoms are loss of smell, loss of taste and breathing difficulties. The UK and other nations issued lockdowns to prevent the spread of the virus, The UK's lockdown was issued on March 23rd 2020.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark> There was less crime during the lockdown, fewer car crashes and less carbon dioxide emissions.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark> Reduced social interactions which led to loneliness, older people were more vulnerable and were advised to shield. </strong></p>]]></description>

         <title>2010 - Ash Cloud</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The ash cloud is the result of a volcanic eruption on Iceland, the eruption itself was quite small but the impact of it was massive. Europe experienced cancellations of flights and other air travel related issues for almost a month, when the ash plume drifted towards the Faroe Islands, northern Scotland and Norway in response to this Iceland declared a state of emergency and European airspace was closed.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark> Due to the suspension of air travel and the ash cloud prevented carbon dioxide emissions entering the atmosphere. The eruption also lead to a better understanding of volcanic ash.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark> The ash cloud damaged crops, roads and homes. Airports had to close due to the ash cloud and many people had to cancel their flights and they were stranded. UK based airlines lost a lot of money due to the ash clouds.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><br/></p>]]></description>

         <title>2024 - The Global IT Outage</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>On the 19th of July a technological failure caused lots of issues for many across the globe, Thousands of flights had to be grounded due to the IT outage. Many passengers had to sleep in the airports while waiting for the technical issue to be resolved, other passengers had to be checked in manually.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark> The outage has taught everyone that "cyber disturbances" are just as important as "cyber attacks" and that the incident can be learned from.</strong></p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark> Not only flights were affected by the IT outage, hospitals couldn't manage patient records and appointment bookings.</strong></p>]]></description>

         <title>2005 - London bombings.</title>

         <description><![CDATA[<p>The London bombings of 2005 were attacks that led to the complete shutdown of the London transport network including the buses and tube. This caused widespread disruption in London for commuters, tourists and the UK travel industry. </p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Positives:</mark></strong> Increased security measures were introduced in airports, train station and other public transport hubs. Baggage is to be checked and policing which now is standard practice.</p><p><br/></p><p><strong><mark>Negatives:</mark></strong> Due to the bombings there was a temporary drop in tourism to London, the disruption also affected the hospitality industry and entertainment industry.</p>]]></description>
