The capitalization of the ages signify the importance of title and role in the community. When you capitalize something, it signifies that it is important, and in this utopia the age groups are important so they are capitalized. Ages are the way that they are grouped because depending on what age you are, you are given different things as a gift. It makes it easier to distribute these gifts to each person by grouping them by age.

The apple represents Jonas's utopia being perfect. This is because an apple, it sweet and good for you, but once you reach the middle/core it is bitter and normally don't eat it so you throw it away. In Jonas's utopia they value having a perfect life. In his utopia they release the people who don't fit in their perfect society, they only want the people who fit in.

In Jonas's utopia, whenever someone starts to have feelings of love for someone, you are to report your feeling. They call this a Stirring, and once you get Stirrings you tell someone, so that you can start taking pills that eliminate those feelings. This is so that no in the utopia falls in love with anyone or choses their own spouses. It is forbidden for people to fall in love.

The receivers house if different from other houses in the community because first of all the receivers house has books. In the receivers house the room's walls were completely covered by bookcases. This is different from other houses in the community because in other houses there were only the necessary reference volumes that each household contained: a dictionary, and the thick community volume. Also in evey other building in the community, there are no locks on the doors but in the receivers house there are locks on most of the doors so that the Receiver is not distracted by people wandering around.

When transmitting memories to someone, the first step is to have them take off their tunic. Then you have to turn the speaker off. After that., the person who you are giving the memory to has to lay down on a bed, close their eyes and relax. Then you place your hands on their back. The first memory that Jonas receives is the memory of snow.

On page 98 when Jonas talks about how he thought there was only now, and only the people of his community. I think that this isn't a good way to live. This means that Jonas, and probably everyone else in his community, doesn't know anything about the generations that came before them and what they had. This is because you don't get to know the history of the world and what was there before your time and how much the world. have evolved.

Jonas is surprised when The Giver turns off the speaker and locks the doors because to turn the speaker off means you have to have "great power" as Jonas says. Jonas is also surprised when he notices the doors are locked because no doors in the community were ever locked, ever. The locks are to insure the Receiver's privacy because he needs concentration. This makes me think that normal citizens don't ever have privacy. If no doors are ever locked in the community then people can go wherever they want, whenever they want.

In chapter eleven Jonas receives three memories which were the memory of snow, the memory of sunshine, and the memory of sunburn. When Jonas received the memory of snow he saw many things that he had never seen before because the community got rid of it. Jonas got to experience what snow was, what a sled was, what runners are, and what hill/downhill means. In the memory of sunshine and sunburn he get to experience the warmth of sunshine as well as the pain of sunburn. The reason the community got rid of these things was to make things easier. Anything that wasn't practical became obsolete.

The title of the book The Giver refers to the old man/former receiver, who transfers all his memories to Jonas. Jonas's job requires him to hold memories of the world and while it may seem like their whole career is about holding the memories, it's really more about giving/passing them from one person to another. The titles The Giver and The Receiver remind us of the idea that memory's are meant to be shared with one another.
