Makeup Trials

Makeup trials were necessary for testing different makeup styles so we could get approval for the makeup looks from directors and producers and eventually settled on a green and gold eye look which suited Abigail nicely and added to the character of jasmine.

Elliot’s personality is playful, expressive, and full of individuality and the use of stickers on his face helped bring that to life visually. The colorful, random looking stickers reflect his creative and carefree nature, making him stand out as someone who’s not afraid to be different. It gave the character a fun, youthful energy that instantly connected with his personality.

To keep the look consistent, we had to make sure the stickers were placed in exactly the same spots for each shoot. This was important for continuity, especially in scenes filmed on different days. We took reference photos after the first application, which we used to match the placement precisely every time. This helped maintain the character’s visual identity and avoided any distracting changes in appearance on screen.

I used vivid green eyeshadow to represent her boldness and tie in with her iconic outfit. Gold accents added a sense of warmth, making her features glow. I applied gems around the eyes to give her a magical, enchanting quality, drawing attention and adding to the fantasy element of her character. Altogether, the dramatic makeup enhanced her identity and made her visually unforgettable.

Before deciding on the final look, I practiced using a range of colors—like purples, blues, and bronzes—but found that green worked best with her skin tone. It brought out her natural warmth and complemented her overall look, especially when paired with gold accents. I blended vivid green eyeshadow across her lids and added gold shimmer to the inner corners and brow bone for a glowing effect. The gems added sparkle and made the design feel more eye-catching. The final result was both bold and beautiful, capturing Jasmine’s spirit and style.

Making the character look tired was important because it helped visually tell part of their story without words. It showed the audience that they were emotionally or physically drained—maybe from stress, lack of sleep, or going through something difficult. This made the character feel more believable and helped the audience connect with what they were going through.

To create the tired look, I used subtle shading under the eyes with purples and browns to mimic dark circles. I also made the skin look dull and pale by using lighter foundation and less blush, which made the character appear more washed out. I slightly smudged the eyeliner and added faint shadows around the eyes to give a worn-down, exhausted effect. All of this worked together to make the character’s tiredness look realistic and convincing on camera or stage.

for Abigail's costume, we wanted it to represent jasmines personality throughout her style. We previously tried many different combinations of layering however we eventually settled on this combination due to how the colours and fabrics played off of each other,

Sizing and allergy forms

We created and sent out a google forms to each of the actors to gather any relevant sizing information and so we knew if anyone had an allergies or sensory issues to materials or makeup products which we then turned all the information gathered into a more palatable source.

The reason for compiling the information into a table was because it was an effective way to share information with directors and producers that can be added to any necessary risk assessments. It also allowed us to access the information quickly when sourcing the costumes, doing the fittings and during makeup trials.

During pre-production, we spent time carefully planning out the costumes, hair, and makeup for each character. We wrote down ideas and created mood boards to explore different styles and how they would visually support the characters' personalities and the story. This early planning helped us stay organized and made sure every look felt intentional and consistent. For example, we discussed how dramatic makeup and gems would suit Jasmine’s royal image, how tired makeup could show a character’s emotional state, and how stickers would bring Elliot’s quirky personality to life. Having these ideas sorted in advance made the actual application process smoother and more effective during filming.

At the beginning of this module, I was given my role as costume design and Hair and Makeup.

Pre Production

To begin with, we shared ideas and collected our thoughts, by discussing our ideas in a group setting, first with just the costumes group to get a basic idea of what we wanted characters in and then brought our ideas to the producers and director who liked our ideas and that led to our expansion and creation of mood boards which we created on an app called Shuffles which is owned by Pinterest, which allowed us to create Pinterest boards of ideas then turn them into collages and mood boards to share with the rest of the team.

We then communicated with the costumes department and got inductions booked in, so we could go around the wardrobe department and pull pieces using our mood boards a refences. Then we booked fittings and got all our actors to try on different ideas that we had, keeping in constant communication with producers for their input and also communicating with the actors keeping in mind their comfort.
