Marc Smith throughout the entirety of the poem comes off very angry, as if something is bothering him, like something he can no longer stand to listen to something. And from the tone he uses for the poem it overall feels like he is being defensive. With the words used he makes the poem feel more about how Chicago is a place that has come from ruins and struggled to get to the place it is today and almost makes the whole thing really patriotic; going through all means to reach ones goals, the American Dream.

Especially him being the mayor at the time, he uses the poem almost as a way to express the problems he had trying to lead the city of Chicago as makes the tone feel as if he trying to feel confident for the people of Chicago and himself regardless of the things that had happened under his leadership.

His tone is different than of Rahim's based on how he makes it feel more shy and less direct.

The use of the beat boxing plays an interesting part of the poem as it gives almost the traditional rap feel that is known for musicians who were raised in Chicago. Many rappers who came from Chicago are known for their struggles, especially in their youth, and giving this upbeat rhythm makes the poem feel almost to how many people who live in Chicago are today. Chicagoans live in many tough situations but they're fighters and overcome any obstacle that comes.
