Dating as far back as the 1800s, hawker culture in Singapore originated from the early migrant population selling quick, affordable meals on street pavements, in town squares and parks – wherever they could set up their makeshift stalls. The earliest known use of the noun hawker is in the early 1500s. OED's earliest evidence for hawker is from 1510. hawker is apparently a borrowing from Middle Low German. Etymons: Middle Low German hoker. Madam Leong, who is believed to be one of Singapore's oldest hawkers, first opened her stall in 1958 at the old National Library canteen in Stamford Road. In 1962, she named the business Nam Seng, and sold wonton noodles and other dishes.

Chinatown Complex and Old Airport Road are two of the largest Hawker centres in Singapore and are open for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Adam Road Food Centre is one of my favorites as well, especially for Malay food. Bedok Corner is also a specialist in Malay food, and is most vibrant on Sunday morning/afternoon. Some of the must-eat hawker stalls in Singapore include Hill Street Tai Hwa Pork Noodle, Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle, Outram Park Fried Kway Teow Mee, Liao Fan Hawker Chan, Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice, and Mr. & Mrs. Mohgan's Super Crispy Roti Prata. Serangoon Garden Market voted Favourite Hawker Centre

Serangoon Garden Market is the first recipient of this award, cementing its cherished place in the hearts of the community. 4 Renowned for its vibrant atmosphere and diverse food choices, Serangoon Garden Market was voted the top choice by the public.
