What is Nvidia? Why are their Video Cards so special?

NVIDIA is a technology corporation based in Santa Clara, California. They are well known for their video cards and GPUs. Many people resort to their video cards but why? There are many competitors such as Intel and AMD yet NVIDIA reigns over them all. Like every other rivalry, they are very close together in terms of performance. The big difference are the smaller features. First of all, NVIDIA video cards tend to generate less heat than its competitors which decreases electricity costs. Additionally, it runs a lot quieter compared to the other competitors in the video card industry. Lastly, the drivers on the NVIDIA cards are a lot better. They are able to run a lot more stabler, fix more bugs and have more features.

It contains access ports to output display devices such as TVs, projectors and monitors. Since the input wires are found in the back of the computer, the video card is placed in the back of the PC for easy access.

How do Video Cards work?

First of all, the video cards connect to the motherboard or the power supply for power. The video card is then able to communicate with the CPU due to the motherboard connection and receives the image data. The video card then figures out how to use the pixels to display the images sent by the CPU. It uses the binary data to develop the colors of the pixels and rasterize the image. Since many games run at 60FPS, video cards have to run through this process approximately 60 times a second. After the graphics are computed, it outputs the data to the output device (monitor, TV or projector) and the final result is shown.

Video cards are very important but, are not necessary. It depends on what you use your PC for. If you do things such as checking your email or read the news, video card are not necessary at all. These days, many CPUs are able to handle the light work for the video card. Since emails do not require a high FPS, the CPU is able to handle that job. On the other hand, gaming and video editing require a video card. Since video games and video editing require a high FPS, the CPU is not able to handle that job. That’s when the video card is required to constantly make those calculations to display those images. Overall, general use doesn’t require a video card but, gaming and video-editing does.

What should you consider when buying a Video Card?

There are many things to consider but, there are a few key things you should focus on. The first and most important thing you should look at is compatibility. Not all video cards are compatible with every motherboard. For example, the video card may be too big for the backplate of your computer. Another example is that, the motherboard may not provide enough power for the video card. Now, all the other considerations are based off of your budget. Make sure you get a video card for what you want to do with your computer but, make your money worth it. If you want to game at a decent experience, you should get the $150 NVIDIA GTX 1050 TI. If you have all the money and the world and want the best experience, for for the NVIDIA TITAN X.

Why should I take care of my Video Card? How can I do it?

Many components of a computer, including a video card can last very long but, if you do not take care of them, they can malfunction in just a year. Sometimes, people overclock their video cards at max settings and overheat their video cards but, the fans and heatsinks are able to cool it down. The thing is, if the fan is dusty, it will have less of a cooling ability. This in turn, causes the video card to overheat and severely damage itself. To avoid this you can just clean your video card. There are many ways to clean your video card but, not all of them ensure safety. For example, if you use a vacuum cleaner the static charges could mean the death of your computer. Instead, you should use compressed air to blow the dust out and then clean up the debris.

The GPU is a processor just like the CPU except it is designed just to compute graphic images and consists of a lot more transistors. It is especially good at geometric designs and algebraic equations. GPUs are generally found near fans and heatsinks since they produce a lot of heat. GPUs generally create a lot of pictures so, they store the calculations within the RAM (random access memory). Sometimes, older GPUs are not found within the video card and so have to be manually installed.

Another important component of the computer is the PCI (peripheral component interconnect). This is most commonly used to connect the many different components of the computers to the motherboard and in this case, the video card. It is very useful for video cards as it allows them to be removed and replaced with another one. Nowadays, many gaming video cards such as the Nvidia GTX 1080 Ti, do not have PCI due to the FPS (frames per second) demand from the gaming industry.

The more memory a video memory it has, the more calculated graphics it can hold. Older video cards had around 8 MB video cards while today’s graphics memory contain several gigabytes of data.

In addition, the video card contains a RAMDAC (random access memory digital-to-analog converter). This is a microchip found on the video card that converts the mathematical image data into the data needed for computer display, analog data. It is able to convert the data into the colors red, green and blue. This is very important as without it, the computer’s data cannot be displayed.

Furthermore, heatsinks are used in video cards. Heat sinks are found on most graphics card due to the amount of heat produced by GPUs. As time goes on GPUs get better and better but, that also means an increase in power demand. The heavy power consumption produces heat that can irreversibly damage the video card. Heat sinks are used in video cards to absorb the heat and spread it on itself. Eventually, the heatsink itself gets hot and requires a fan to cool it down. Not all video cards have heatsinks; Some have different cooling modules such as water-cooling.
