Zombie Ants and Virtual Reality

Hi, I'm William. I'm currently finishing a MSCA fellowship in the Netherlands and looking to move to the UK for a Lecturer/Assistant Professor position and want to get a head start on building an outreach network. I do a lot of public talks about zombie ants and the use of science in zombie films, and I have also created a virtual reality game about zombie ants (alpha version freely available on Steam: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2416150/Zombie_Ants_VR/, full version available June 1st). A lot of my outreach efforts are built around the idea of gamification of biology education and getting the public interested in science topics. So if you are interested in using virtual reality for outreach, or if you have any information about ongoing projects in the UK based around technology or the gamification of Biology topics, I'd love to hear from you. I'd also be glad to participate in any talks about zombie science.

The Role of Arts & Design Practice and Methodology

Hi - Justine here. Im very interested in the role of Practice Research, particularly in Arts, Design and Cultural studies, and how this e.g. contributes to the critical thinking function of our 2045 Uni vision. Im interested not only in how these practices enable communication and public engagement, but also how they can sit at the heart of research (and teaching) processes. Im based at University of Westminster, however I don't see this as bound by geographical location - rather a community of practice that benefits from sharing different regional perspectives.

Reward and Recognition - Integrating Engaged Research into Researcher Careers

Hi, I'm Michaela Livingstone-Banks, Head of PCER for the Maths, Physical and Life Sciences Division at the University of Oxford. I've been working on a project that seeks to develop practical criteria and guidance for recognising and embedding engaged research within the Academic Career and Recognition Framework (ACRF, which aims to enhance academic career paths, workload management, and recognition for teaching and research staff) in the MPLS Division context. By evidencing and rewarding engaged research, the initiative aims to ensure that engaged research is valued and recognised within research careers to incentivise meaningful collaborations with public communities, policymakers, and industry, ultimately enhancing research quality, promoting responsible practices, and generating broader societal benefits. In brief: making engagement count in ways that matter to researchers in tangible ways that will enable greater time and consideration (so going beyond good will). I've been doing some desk research, talking to Universities who include engaged research within their academic career frameworks/pathways and will be hosting a series of workshops with key stakeholders to co-develop criteria. We'll also hopefully pilot and/or refine these criteria with engaged departments, and host a round-table with representatives from other Universities. I would love a) to involve anyone who is keen share their insights and expertise as part of this process and b) share what we come up with. Or anything else around reward and recognition. Interested or have questions? Please drop me a line: michaela.livingstone@mpls.ox.ac.uk
