For my first entry, my Lorax finds himself in an aluminum recycle bin at the Hays County Driftwood Recycling Center. Recycling is a method of collecting and converting waste material into new materials and objects. Recyclable materials include different kinds of paper, metals, glass, plastics, car parts, etc. This topic relates to Environmental Science in that through the individual effort of recycling there is less waste of many potentially useful materials and a reduction in the consumption of fresh raw materials. Recycling is an extremely important part of protecting our environment and making sure that our consumption of resources is at a sustainable level. Overall recycling is an environmentally friendly practice that the Lorax would approve of.

For my third entry, my Lorax finds himself in front of the Dripping Springs Wesley Gallery & Frame building. This buildings green roof utilizes several solar panels, a renewable energy source, to power the electrical systems within the building. Solar power is defined as the conversion of energy from sunlight into electricity, either directly using photovoltaics (PV), or indirectly using concentrated solar power. This topic relates to Environmental Science in that solar energy is one of the cleanest energy sources available and is being utilized more heavily in recent years in order to cut down on pollution from nonrenewable energy sources. Solar energy not only produces no harmful byproducts, but it generates relatively cheap energy after the upfront costs are paid for. Overall, the utilization of solar energy is keeping our environment clean and the Lorax would advocate for this type of energy production.

For my second entry, my Lorax finds himself next to a rain water collection tank behind one of Dripping Spring's local businesses Jump Wild. Rain water collection system like the one pictured here captures the otherwise wasted water that runs off the roof of a large building. This relates to Environmental Science because capturing rain water and storing it in tanks, businesses that use large amounts of water can not only save money on their utility bill but can refrain from drawing water out of lakes and aquifers. This is a conservation effort that can easily be carried out by businesses to improve impact on the environment and to help with staying sustainable.

For my fourth entry, my Lorax is standing in front of a gasoline pump at a local gas station. This fuel pump is special in that it has an alternate option to traditional gasoline. As one can see, this pump dispenses E85, which is an ethanol fuel blend of 85% denatured ethanol fuel and 15% gasoline (or other hydrocarbon by volume). This relates to Environmental Science because E85 is an alternative fuel source that people with Flex Fuel vehicles can use instead of gasoline. Through the use of this alternative fuel, humans can help reduce their reliance of fossil fuels which are quickly dwindling and also hurting the environment. Overall utilization of E85 is a positive advance in the battle of finding alternative fuel for vehicles.

For my fifth entry, my Lorax finds himself in my backyard overlooking the hill country. I chose this picture because of the large amount of cedar trees that populate the area around my home. Cedar trees are classified as an invasive species in central Texas as they soak up large amounts of ground water which can indirectly kill off trees that are near cedars as they cant get enough water. This relates to Environmental Science because when studying the environment, scientists have to look at the species within the ecosystem and analyze how they interact with each other. In this case, the cedar trees are having a negative impacts on the plant/tree life in this area of Texas. Overall this is a problem within the local environment that needs to be addressed to prevent ecological damage.
