How do sin or the perception of sin, along with guilt and revenge, affect people physically, psychologically, and emotionally?

The guilt from the sin that Dimmesdale had committed, started to make him sick. He wasn't actually sick, it was more of just a very unsteady feeling. Chillingworth noticed that he wasn't actually sick and that he needed to try to "dig deeper" into this case. The idea that he sinned and got Hester pregnant with their child made him go crazy. He was psychologically and emotionally unstable because of all of this. He didn't know what to do with his life. He was so lost and confused.
