Teaching philosophy; Constructivism

The teaching philosophy that Mr Keating is the same as Ms Gruwell he believes in bringing in real life issues in the classroom to add on what they have to learn.

Beliefs, Approaches and methods teaching: Non-conventional teaching approach

Dead poets Society is novel about non-conventional teaching. John Keating is the facilitator. The students are left in order to be more active in having part in the class. He teaches the students about the freedom to express their ideas in literature. His teaching approach is to teach his students to chase their own dreams. His teaching method does not allow his students to think Critical, it does not allow to Solve problems, and Decision-making skills.

Dead Poets Society: John Keating
In the front cover, John Keating represents as a non-conventional teacher and his students as the products of his teaching. Secondly, there are two quotations on the front cover of Dead Poet Society. Those are "He was their inspiration” and “He made their lives extraordinary”. The word ‘He’ in the quotation refers to John Keating. He was made as a source of inspiration for the students because of his creativity. The following quote shows that Mr Keating encourages his students to chase their dreams, "You must strive to find your own voice, boys, and the longer you wait to begin, the less likely you are to find it at all.”

Freedom writers: Ms. Erin Gruwell
Mrs. Gruwell is an idealistic teacher, she assigns her students to put their diaries together in a book, this make the students express the following words: “we weren’t just students in a class anymore, we were writers with our own voices, our own stories” the following quote is from learners diary “I guess it’s never too late to change in life. If I did it, others should be able to as well. It really depends on how badly one wants to change. I’m lucky to have another opportunity at a clean start.” – Diary 32

Ms. Gruwell's philosophy can be implemented in South Africa to help students with difficulties to have their voices heard, as well as creating a sense of comfort and openness in the classroom. Thus with encouragement from us as the educators. Student can learn to share their thoughts with their peers.
A safe classroom environment is also what Ms. Gruwell aims to create through class discussions and sharing journal entries, she create a sense of community in which students open up to each other. If the South Africa school context can implement this philosophy they will be creating an inclusive learning environment.
implementing Mr Keating's teaching approach will not be relevant to our schools context as it will not give learners chance to raise their voice and their opinions because he is using a teacher centered approach where the teacher is the facilitator and learners are expected to just listen to the teacher and do as the teacher instruct them to do. however, he teaching his students to think creative.
