We will be making a short film roughly 3-5 minutes in length.

To help understand the artistic purposes behind short films we watched some and had a group discussion about them.

In our groups we brainstormed ideas for our short film. as a group we have decided to use the genre of romance. log line is a a brief 1\2 sentence summary of a film.

scripts always start with a scene description of three bits of information interior exterior or both then the location eg gym,restaurant etc and day\night 1 page=1 minute

followed by the action the scene begins with eg john is walking through the park and he is clearly in a rush.

character names are before the lines and in caps

parenthetical is the equivalent of stage direction.

directors vs producers

directors are the main creative in the project doing things like marking up scripts storyboards and working with the actors. while the producer is a more practical role doing things such as budgeting and scheduling however the 2 roles overlap a great deal and the 2 are ultimately working together for the same goal.

static composition makes use of straight lines and are soothing to the audience.

dynamic composition uses diagonal and are unsettling to the audience

lead space is the space infront of the character (where the eyes are leading)

180 degree rule is to draw a ʼline of actionʼ and not cross it

rembrandt lighting uses one light and a reflector which essentially creates key light and fill light.

ellipsis is a break in time in the narrative world usually signified with a black screen or transition etc

insert shot a close up of something unnatural (usually gives information) eg a book or phone screen

parallel editing two scenes that are juxtaposed eg godfather scene

Next we headed to Salford art gallery and peel park respectively to film for the montage both went fantastic and we managed to film all scenes in 1 day

My job as sound recordist wasn’t needed for the montage so I had a lot of responsibility to ensure things were easy for the camera operator director and actors be that holding coats helping with angles and moral support.

practical research

on friday i researched possible music and sfx i could use for my edit in post unfortunately i was unable to book out sound recording equipment however i watched youtube to familiarise myself with the equipment and i plan on booking out equipment this friday.

i booked out the equpiment on the friday and recorded on location (matts flat) for a few minutes and found no issues.

upon meeting with the team we discussed that i would only need to record sound for half the shoot and a floor plan would be excessive as all i need to do was get behind the camera (out the way of the lights so i didnt create shadows) and use the boom pole to get as close to the actors as possible.
