The rainforest was amazing again today! I enjoyed it even more than on Thursday. The amount of vegetation and the variety of nature was impressive.
Another important and purely Guadeloupian tradition that I learned about was the making of cassavere and rhum. I was truly amazed about the fact how natural and organic the making of rhum is in Longueteau distillerie.

Walking in the rainforest it is for me a great pleasure, all this green around me and this silence. It remembers me that we are really small and that we take part of this world only for a speck of time. We should really enjoy it. The rum destillery was fascinating because it is such a pur beverage, nothing added and they do not really produce waste. It is a good thing. And it was a lovely place there.

I learned a lot from the walk in the rainforest, e.g. how strongly living organisms depend on each other. There is no tree that does not have other plants growing on it, which of course reflects how strongly humans all around the world depend on each other and on nature.
The info about cassavas was interesting as well and completely new to me.
The visit to the destillery was an enriching experience as I learned how rum is made, that it can be done in an environmentally-friendly way and what it means for Guadeloupe's history .
I chose the picture of the cane frog for today, because this ugly and mean-looking frog has a function in growing sugar cane as a substitute for pesticides.

Different paths will lead to the common goal
In my opinion, the focus of today's learning has been on the journey through the rainforest to Chute do Carbet. This experience allowed us to learn about the biodiversity of a unique ecosystem, the brilliant presence of thousands of species living in perfect harmony, the natural and cultural heritage of Guadalupe, the perfection of the "music of nature", the rainbow of the forest and the symbolism of its colours.

Enjoying this wealth is a surprising privilege. It is wonderful. Contact with nature brings inner peace. I've been loved by the vivacity of this place.
The rainforest we visit can perfectly assume a classroom context. All the disciplines, the whole curriculum and transversal training find here content to explore. In some cases, transdisciplinarity has here an extraordinary opportunity to combine.

Today visits to the tapioca flour factory, the rum factory and the cascade Carbet in the rain forest are excellent examples of adaptation and resilience of species, which seek to survive the constant change of environmental, economic, social, financial, political, health, justice and education systems. In this social response, family and school education must be a political priority, maintaining the focus on an integrated approach to skills that promote lifelong learning. Only in this way can we preserve and share multiculturalism as a whole. In this sense, having the rain forest as a outdoor classroom for learning skills, articulated with the current curriculum the Portuguese Educational System, we propose the following project:

Task to development de key competences for a lifelong learning

Theme: Discovering the “Green Giants” of the Rain Forest - Guadeloupe

Place: Outdoor classroom - Rain Forest - Guadeloupe

Students: 9th grade (14-15 years) - groups of 3 students

Objective: To develop key competences for lifelong learning.

Teaching situation: Field outings, outdoor learning, guided discovery teaching and peer review, with close and distance monitoring by teachers.

Outdoor Classroom Work Project

1)      Communication in mother tongue: French and Creole – Task 1 - Find a green giant, create a friendship and write a story;

2)      Communication in foreign languages: Portuguese, English, Finnish, Danish, German and Lithuanian – Task 2 - Give it a name in the different languages and write a billing story;

3)      Mathematical competence and basic competences in science and technology: Science and Mathematics – Task 3 - Systematic classification; Size scale (tree/students); Trigonometry;

4)      Digital competence: ICT – Task 4 - Compass/GPS and made an eBook;

5)      Learning to learn: Natural Sciences – Task 5 - Describe the “green giant” friend with the sense organs: see, hear, feel, smell and imagine the taste;

6)      Social and civic competences: History and Geography – Task 6 - When the “green giant” was born; The climate changes of the habitat; Cardinal points; Logistic of the visit;

7)      Sense of initiative and entrepreneurship: Civic Education – Task 7 - Protection and conservation of the habitat; eBook dissemination;

8) Cultural awareness and expression: Physical Education; Visual Education; Technological Education – Task 8 - Orienteering and trekking (equipment, exercise, food and hydration); Draw a sheet (fingerprint); Create a rudimentary instrument (sound of the forest)/take a photographic mural/take video “the green giant dance”.

Evaluation of the work project of flexibility and curricular autonomy: Interdisciplinary Formative Evaluation - Qualitative Assessment.

Being in the rainforest today reminded me of how important it is to protect our environment and nature. It was great to walk around in the lush greenery and you feel really small walking next to the green giants. But when we left, more and more people came to that place, so I was wondering, what the visitors leave behind, except Co2 emissions, rubbish and 10000 photos a day...what is their's, what was our contribution in terms of conserving this unique spot?
