Important features of this system include- dams, reservoirs and canals. In Sumerian city-states, the care of the irrigation system was given to the government; so they organized workers to clean canals, and repair dams and reservoirs regularly. A special government group called the "gagullu" patrolled canals and stopped farmers from taking water illegally.

They were created because sumerians believed gods appreciated them expressing their religious beliefs. By placing these statues in their homes and temples, the god/s would bless them with long lives, many children, and a successful harvest. At first boats were small baskets with a mast. But over time they were able to create boats made of wood they stretched to 60 feet long. The bricks met at the center to create an arch. Arches were used in many different buildings such as tombs, bridges, temples, and homes of wealthy people.

They also played games to obtain good luck. The Sumerians looked for small shells and stones, and used woods as a board to play on. They also used very exquisite stones such as Lapis-Lazuli. City-states tend to be bigger are more organized than cities. The Sumerian surround their city state with a wall that stretched 6 miles. Bronze gates were added to the walls to keep enemies out. Deep ditches were also dug for protection and these were called moats. Kings ruled these city states and they collected taxes, enforced laws, they had to make sure irrigation canals and temples were in good shape, and most importantly rule.

Their laws helped maintain order among people in  Sumerian society. The first law code was written on clay tablets and dates back to 2050 BCE. The code was most likely written for King Ur-Nammu of Ur by his son, Shulgi. When a person was accused of committing a crime, judges organized a trial with witnesses to decide if the person was guilty or not.

People used music to worship and appease the gods, and during temple ceremonies and sacrifices. Some people also wrote love songs. Sumerian musicians played drums, reed pipes, metal pipes, and lyres. Sumerian instruments were heavily decorated.

The strong army would be used to fight for land boundaries and water usage. Temporary citizen soldiers, who were farmers but the king forced then to join the army, and professional soldiers served in these armies. If someone refused to serve would lead to death. The army had chariots which were pulled by donkeys. They had two groups of "foot" soldiers who had the role of marching in an organized manor. The heavy Infantry had to carry axes and wear light helmets. Everyone had shields and when the battle was over, the winning side would keep the prisoners as slaves and behead prisoners.
