         <description><![CDATA[Stage 1 (Before 1500)  Indigenous and non-Indigenous societies developed independently of each other
Stage 2 (1500-1870)  After European contact, alliances with Indigenous societies were made for military and economic reasons. A large degree of mutual tolerance/respect remained intact (despite the emergence of elements of Stage 3)
Stage 3 (1871-1969)  The now larger settler populations continued attempts to forcefully absorb Indigenous land and people into “mainstream” Canadian society.
Stage 4 (1970-Present)  Emergence of anti-colonial Indigenous activism, attempts at reclaiming Indigenous cultural practices, and a series of legal challenges to force new conversations on Indigenous-settler relationships
