At the age of 16, she studied at the Slade School of Fine Arts, London from 1932 to 1936. Of her time at the Slade, she recalled, 'after Badminton, the Slade was like stepping from hell into heaven. At the Slade, Fedden was a pupil of the theatre designer, Vladimir Polunin. After a long period of time, she decided to move back to Bristol and made a living by teaching art and painting portraits until WWII broke out. Moreover, Fedden’s subjects are often executed in bold, expressive style with vivid, contrasting colours and her still lifes paints are often placed in front of a landscape, as she enjoyed the contrasting of disparate, even quirky elements.

After going under the dire circumstance in the fierce war, Mary Fedden came back to art with an optimistic attitude and energy which was shown in her vivid flowers paintings and still lifes .
Analyse Green and Orange still life

In this Green and Orange still life, Mary Fedden tried to recreate the scene of a set of wine glass and fruits which was placed separately on a table with different patterns ( some of the glasses was put on the wooden trace, some was put directly on the surface of the green table and the glass fruit bowl was placed on the part decorated with black and white diamond pattern ). From my point of view, this table was located in front of a big window and a large balcony decorated with black and white pattern floor. It is easy to observe that green and orange which are two main colours used in this painting have made the paintings look way more vivid and unique due to the high contrast between these colours . By this way of using colours, Fedden has shown her development in style of art. In comparison with some previous paintings, the colours in these paint was more statuated, less faded by reducing in mixing white in order to create a new tone and the objects were placed more separately.

Like I have stated before, using two high contrast colours as main colours make the paintings really vivid and lively. However, although having used very vibrant colour, the way she balance the colours with some mid tone in the middle between some areas not only has calm down the “dynamic” atmosphere but also brings backs the peaceful feeling as well as the pleasure of life

Initially, it is easy to witness that there is an outline surrounding every main object on the table. This expression makes the objects be more pop up and also assists in drawing the attention of the observer to the stuff that the artist wants to emphasise. Moreover, the dark line surrounding the green wine vast and the fruit holder help to mitigate the high contrast between these complementary opposition colours. In addition, the way she does not use the outline for the background also made the painting’s atmosphere more peaceful and harmonious.

In this painting, while she used a very solid area to describe to wall and balcony ( the back ground), the table in the front was descibed by a more saturated colour. Moreover, she also drawn some very thin line with distinctive colours in order to recreate the reflection of the objects on the others and this technique also helped to creat the harmony by slightly mixing some cold tone colours with the warm tone one.

Looking at this artwork fills me full with the pleasures of life by recreating a very peaceful and familiar context with the most quotidian objects such as wine glasses, a wine vast and a bowl of fruits.

Initially, the way she used high contrast colours has inspired me a lot as well as the way she decides to recreate the scene by looking at more than one angle like from above and from the side.

Personally, I would like to create paintings with more colours with a wilder spirit. Moreover, in my opinions, although I really like the peaceful feeling brought backs by her works, sometimes it can be considered as too girly for me.

Inspired by the colour and the separated composition used in her artwork, I have created my own artwork by using a lot of personal stuff in order to recreate the vibe of my lifestyle just like what she has done in her paintings.
