The quote demonstrates a contradiction for the character, Day. Day had always kept a distance from his family to keep them safe, but now has to confront them. Day feels this will put them in danger, but not more danger than if he doesn't try to save him. Day is acting differently because he is desperate, and is desperate enough to put himself in danger, along with innocent people because he was put in a postion where there were no other options. Day did not have the freedoms to simply be imprisoned, but faced death whether he was caught or not. This lack of rights and freedoms led to Day getti

This memory moment was Day's, who was thinking back to when his mother was shot. His mother was innocent, but was shot just to quicken up the process of catching Day. This moment was important because it not only showed how much his mother's death affected him, but also revealed a dystopian characteristic. The characteristic revealed was that the humans are dehumanized to an extent in the fact that the captain did not see Day's mother as a person, but as something that would break Day. The government also does not see the people as humans because they test the plague on them.

"Our house had been searched on routine inspection by troops before, just like every other house on our street. I Dad hid it somewhere, they'd find it." (Lu 233)

The memory moment was Day's when her was thinking back to his father. His Dad was trying to find proof, but evidence of what was not revealed. The assumption could be made that he was trying to fin proof that the Republic was spreading propaganda and was not always that way. The proof found was a coin from the past. Day's mother knew it was dangerous to hide even a coin in their home, which shows to the extent in which the patrols searched their house and belongings. This shows how the Republic was paranoid that the people would find out their secrets, so they had to preform inspections to rule out the possibility that their secrets would be revealed. Day's Dad, however, knew too much, and is most likely why he never showed up again.

A contradiction is that, when June said that Day has never killed anyone, it seemed out of character because he was a fugitive who seemed to be ruthless, and would do anything for the people he loved. He may have not killed anyone because he has seem what death does to people, with an example of the plague. This made me wonder why the government saw him as a threat, especially since he was presumed to not be intelligent by the fact that he did not pass his Trial, until it was further revealed that he was a prodigy.

This quote is followed by a vague memory of June and her parents, but she mostly remembers Metias being her father figure. The reason why June does not have parents is because they were seen as a threat to the government, and they lied to her by saying that her parents died in a car crash. This is an example of how information was restricted by the government, and shows how the government will keep secrets to protect their image. The government will also do anything to have their secrets stay secrets, even if it means killing innocent people.

These tough questions also lead me to having more questions. I am wondering if the plague is a way of population control because it seems to be only in the poor neighborhoods. Also, those who can afford the vaccination do not get the plague. This shows that the government is again restricting information from their people, which shows how corrupt and sneaky it is in the time of war. This makes me wonder: how did the government act before the war took place?

''Metias is acting as the wise man who is giving knowledge to his sister, even after his death. The lesson that Metias is telling June in this section is that the only documents safe from the government are the ones that are written by hand. There is also a special code needed to access the government, which shows how the freedoms are restricted, because they do not have the same access to information as select officials and soldiers do. The only way that June could access the information on the Internet was by "hacking" it from what Metias had taught her. The fact that only hand written information is safe from the government also hints at the fact that the citizens are under constant surveillance.

"Day didn't fail his Trial. Not even close. In fact, he got the same score I did: 1500/1500. I am no longer the Republic's only prodigy with a perfect score." (Lu 187)

This is an "Aha Moment" when June realizes Day has also got a perfect score on the Trial. This is yet another example of how the government is keeping secrets from their people. Day was experimented on and left to die, while June was treated with the utmost respect and was given a high rank. This shows that uniform expectations are expected from people, and if you exceed them then you are seen as a threat to their government. For example, the best way to eliminate the threat was to make June on their side, because being on the Patriots side could be dangerous to them. In Day's case, however, the Republic wanted to find a way to understand what makes him above average, so they could use the information to their advantage. This shows that the Republic would do anything to resolve a threat.

"No plague patrols wander the streets, and the only sounds come from the occasional cars and the distant blare of the JumboTron ads." (Lu 115)

JumboTrons were the way that the Republic communicated with the citizens, and were mentioned again and again throughout the novel. Through the JumboTrons, they spread misinformation and propaganda to their citizens. The JumboTrons, at the end of the novel, stated that Day was killed when it was actually John who was executed in his place. This misinformation was spread to make sure that the Republic's image was not tainted by the fact that they had executed the wrong person, and had let a "dangerous" convict escape. This shows how the government will go to extreme lengths to insure their people that they are keeping them safe and in control, while the reality of the situation is that chaos is occurring. Control was maintained by the Republic using plague patrols and the power figurehead of Elector Primo, making the citizens feel watched and fearful, while keeping them from finding out the truth, and preventing them from rebelling.

June usually wouldn't help the Colonies because she was trained not to, but she had decided to help them because the Republic betrayed Metias, Day, June's parents, Day's mother, and, in effect, they betrayed her. This contradiction to June's character was the result of the lies and information that the government kept from her. The government has restricted information about the from June, as well as all the the citizens in the Republic. The Republic spread the propaganda, making a bias towards their side, which did not give the people a choice in whose side to be on. The lies and propaganda lead to the Republic losing their two prodigies, and deadliest weapons.
