Behaviorist Theory

The behaviorist theory states that language stems from a combination of individual letters and their sounds and focuses on breaking down a task, into individual components and becoming proficient in each step. This theory was brought about by Skinner who states that progress must be observable and measurable. Some ways that this can be used in the classroom are, by using games that give rewards for correct answers and using individual steps to learn an entire task but only giving that task to them one step at a time until they have mastered the one step.

Semiotics Theory

The semiotics theory states that there is more than one way to express and idea and focuses on the role of various symbolic forms in communication. Halliday coined this term and it refers to the ways that signs and symbols are created and understood by a society. This can be done in a classroom by having students create posters or flyers that talk about whatever their topic is through mostly visual aspects like symbols and present it that way to the class. Another way that this can be done is by having students in small groups create videos of skits that they have created about their subjects.

The sociocultural theory is that learning about language occurs through our interactions with other people. Vygotsky introduced this by saying human learning presupposes a specific social nature and process by which children grow into the intellectual life of those around them. Ways that this theory could be present in the classroom is through shared story telling and having think aloud sessions in class when discussing topics.

The constructivist theory is that we learn to write by writing; we learn to speak by speaking, the concept states that language is learned by actively using language. This concept uses assimilation and accommodation to gain this knowledge and is unique from person to person. This is done in the classroom through problem solving and cooperative learning. In this theory students must be actively involved in their own learning and not just listening and taking it in
