I feel motivated with a sense of wonder when looking at this painting. I feel this way because it reminds me of a lot of deep space, the natural beauty of planets, and parts of the solar system we have not explored. The vibrant colors also strongly influence my feelings. I like how the painting uses a palate not commonly found in daily life.

The colors and shapes impact my initial impressions by giving me a positive vibe.

I would describe the figures in the painting as feminine and sharp. I find them to be feminine from the shapes of their chests as well as the length of their hair. The lines used all seem to come to sharp edges and create very distinct boundaries of where the figures begin and end. The figures seem to have a neutral to negative expression further contributing the the painting feeling sharp.

I feel slightly uneasy when looking at this painting. The expressions of the figures do not imply that they are happy with their situation, although it would be a stretch to say they look dissatisfied with it. I assume the figures are women and they appear to be naked. These traits do not feel like something I should be staring at.

Before drawing this picture I did not think very much of the painting other than the fact that it made me uncomfortable. I was reassured to learn that Picasso intended it to be this way. I did not have very much confidence in my ability to sketch this painting at first due to how abstract it already was. I thought it would be harder to make my

version resemble more than rough lines.

After drawing I realized that the painting was easier to sketch than I had previously thought. Breaking the paper into smaller chunks made it easier to relate the painting to my sketch on the go. I am much prouder of this sketch than I thought I would be and am glad I could surprise myself in a good way. I look forward to doing more sketches and learning more skills along the way!

I think that he black segments also create a sense of balance in that the area between each one is relatively similar.

I personally like this painting a-lot, but I sympathize with most critics that it is probably overrated.

While drawing this painting I found myself thinking that the subject matter was most likely a city. I think this is the case because most of the shapes on the painting are rectangles stretching from the bottom to the top of the page like skyscrapers. I also think this is because it looks like people inhabit many different corners of the structures like in a city.

In this painting, I find that the use of line leads to a very hard-to-follow pattern that results in a very "offbeat" rhythm that can still be tracked. The piece directs your eyes to start observing in many different places but I find myself always tracking further upwards. I think that the lines being mostly parallel to the left and right sides of the painting led to my gaze up and down more so than left to right.

I am extremely on the fence of this topic but at the end of the day I think I have to agree that any found object can be art. I believe this because I often consider things that are naturally made to be just as beautiful if not more so than art made by people. Since I find this to be the case, if a person were to pick up and present a beautiful rock to me or a gallery I would agree to them that they "made" art out of a found object. Being that I think a rock can be art I do not think that I can exclude the weird pieces by Duchamp and Rauschenberg.

March 21 Picasso Response

I disagree with the statement that the final works of Picasso are merely “incoherent scrawls.” Although I agree that his later works take less defined shapes and become more focused on the shape of the nude human body, I feel that his work most certainly still had merit. I can understand how the general public was less pleased that Picasso became more captivated by drawing nudes and scenes of lovemaking. Most people, especially in the United States, live according to the societal value that genitalia and breasts are private parts that should be safely guarded and hidden from all people except those with whom we have the utmost trust. If this was not the case I firmly believe that Picasso’s later works would be interpreted differently. I feel that Picasso’s late works challenged the traditional notions of creativity in that they dove right in on a new focus that was and still is rather unpopular among the general public. It is my understanding that those immersed in the art world are much more comfortable with the nude form and it is very common practice to depict it. I strongly feel that Picasso’s goal for his entire life was to create meaningful art that came from his deepest emotions and the later pieces that he created did not line up with what the general public wanted to see. If Picasso had instead made his artworks based on what the public wanted they would have lost the genuine and often tumultuous emotion Picasso was trying to convey. From Picasso’s late work, I think that he was trying harder than ever to put all his emotions onto the canvas for the world to see. I also feel that just because the scenes were mostly of nude people and lovemaking it does not mean that he was just a sexually motivated person. I think that he wished to capture the most raw and essential part of being a human and successfully brought light to what most people were discomforted by. I don’t think his goal was to make explicitly vulgar art but rather to make art of people in their most vulnerable states. This could have been a parallel to his condition since as he got older he was less and less able to comfortably live and create art without the constant support of those around him. He could have been trying to find a way to parallel his vulnerability to the vulnerability one feels when being nude or when making love. I will be the first to admit that I was slightly uncomfortable with the constant nudity that Picasso was creating but at the same time I strongly felt it was for a deeper purpose than to just represent people naked to satisfy his sexual desires. On the subject of his works depicting matadors and noblemen, I feel that these pieces were right on par with the rest of his works. This could be due to my untrained eye, but I do not see very much of a difference between the later pieces which were created with less definition, and his older pieces which tended to have more defined lines. Even if his works took different shapes due to his hands being less reliable, I do not think that it takes anything away from them. I feel that Picasso was still able to put his emotions onto the canvas but just through a slightly different style. Whether intentional or not I think that it is normal nonetheless for an artist's style to change through their lifetime and that there is no reason to doubt the validity of Picasso’s later art just because of this shift. I think the same level of emotion is still represented and that is what art is truly about.

The way the structure reaches out of the base which resembles a pot reminds me of how a stem would reach out of soil. The way that the structure then gets larger towards the middle and top reminds me of how a plant's leaf would expand out to have more surface area.

---I am not sure why this did not submit on the 5th, I just realized the draft was saved still so that is why it is submitted on the 22nd

I am not too much of a history buff so my knowledge of ancient Egypt is limited. I know that cats were extremely culturally significant and were seen as very high-ranking religious figures. I also know that the pyramids which they built are a hot topic of debate as to whether or not it was physically possible for them to be constructed with the technology that was being used at the time. These pyramids were built to be the resting places of high-ranking officials and were very complex.

The figures in the images are represented in a very flat manner. They appear to be 2D but the illusion of depth is created by the appendages of the figures being in front of their bodies at times. The figure's proportions are very unrealistic in that some people are depicted as much larger than others and their appendages are improperly sized. I would also describe these figures as being represented in a very simple manner with very few intricate details.
