I believe that the older we get we do have a sense of awareness that we use to shape our beliefs but for a long time our parents beliefs are who we trust. Huck's parents weren't around or showed him the abusive side of life, if we look at Huck in the beginning of the book that is how he survived by looking to darker sides of life.
