The first big takeaway that I had was that I need to redirect my classroom so that the students are the producers of information rather than being solely consumers. Secondly, it is important for students to not only experience a "productive struggle", but to also value the productive struggle process. This should be celebrated more than getting the right answer the first time around. Lastly, instead of providing explanations to students who are struggling, I could provide them with probing questions or questions to ask their peers in order to find their own explanation.

I read the article "How to Make Student Choice Work". The three 'big take-aways' from this are listed below. 1. Know Your Students - In order to have a successful classroom you need to know your students. Know where their background educationally and personally. Know their likes/dislikes educationally and personally. You have a better chance of meeting your student's needs when you know their learning styles. 2. Start Small - Don't stress about making everything a choice. Focus on one or two things a year on how you want to enable student choice in the classroom. This year my goal was to allow my students choice in flexible seating. I purchased a lot of different options, and it is their choice as to what they want to do with it. 3. Find and Use Digital Tools - Provide choices for the students to get technologically involved within the classroom. For example, we are doing a biography project for the month of February and my students have the choice to use any type of online resource to present their project. Main Idea Picture:

Classroom management can be tough at times. My biggest take away and what I tell my students all the time is that it is THEIR classroom and I am just a member and a facilitator for learning. By involving them in the decisions and boundaries, they will be more invested in the classroom. It was sad that a student may enter the room saying "you won't like me" because he was not a reader. What a strong message that sends to a teacher. We need to value and appreciate every student for who he or she is.

Take Away:
1.) There is more to both student and teacher than the surface observations. The more you humanize and relate to each other, the more successful the entire class environment will be.
2.) You do not have to be "mean" to be effective with classroom management. As the adult, you have the ability to create a firm, yet respectful environment. This calls to mind the Haim Ginott quote, "

“I’ve come to a frightening conclusion that I am the decisive element in the classroom. It’s my personal approach that creates the climate. It’s my daily mood that makes the weather. As a teacher, I possess a tremendous power to make a child’s life miserable or joyous. I can be a tool of torture or an instrument of inspiration. I can humiliate or heal. In all situations, it is my response that decides whether a crisis will be escalated or de-escalated and a child humanized or dehumanized.”

3.) Students deserve to have a voice in their own classroom.
