Odysseus Returns

After twelve years of hardship and loss of a king, Odysseus finally returns to a kingdom running out of food and crawling with greedy suitors to the throne. With this terrible situation Odysseus goes to a banquet full of the power thirsty suitors and acts like a beggar. Little did suitors know that they would be killed later by the king of Ithaca and his mighty bow. The result is that Ithaca is now returning to it’s former glory.

When Odysseus finally arrived he didn’t roam the streets crying “Your king has returned” he didn’t “Storm the castle killing every suitor in his sight” but he simply visited an old friend who was talking to his son Telemachus. Upon his visit to Odysseus’s friend he acts as if he is a traveler in front of Telemachus. Odysseus was testing Telemachus to see if he still remembered Odysseus. When Telemachus finally realised who this “traveler” really was Odysseus told him his plan to act like a beggar and then when it was least expected he would revile his true identity and kill all the suitors with his bow.

Here’s the view of a chef cooking all the food for the feast.

“I didn’t think much of the beggar at first but then the impossible happened he was actually Odysseus our true faithful king and he killed all of those rat-like suitors with his bow.”

Now that Ithaca has it’s king back Odysseus has to sacrifice himself to Poseidon to make peace with humans and gods.

ODYSEUSS - HIS RETURN HOME - EMILIE Imagine along ten years of war and two years of struggling. Imagine leaving with six hundred men, then arrive as the only surviver. Well Odysseus didn’t have to imagine!Odysseus was elated to be home, to see his family and to get those stubborn suitors away from his wife.Back the Ithica Palace Odysseus’s wife Penelope who couldn’t stall those suitors anymore as they caught her the other night unweaving her weaving that she did early that day. Odysseus was welcomed by somewhat of a welcome from his son Telemachus. Sadly Telemachus couldn’t remember who his father Odyseuss was[as Odyseuss left went Telemachus was not even two years old], but Odyseuss knew straight away that that was his son. Soon after Odyseuss told Telemachus that he was his father, Telemachus told his mother Penelope that instead of choosing her king they should compete. So Penelope set up a target that not only the fittest suitor could get their arrow to even land on it.The suitors kept shooting but not was even close to it. Then after a long time of shooting then missing then shooting then missing finally someone got it on, Telemachus ran over to him looked at him and said, “ Mother, Father is back.”And as it says in the text ““When Penelope came to the head of the stairs, her face was unsmiling. She bowed her head to Odysseus and waved him towards a chair. ‘You must be weary, sir, after all your travelling. I am most grateful to you for ridding the palace of those wasters,’ and she waved her hand about her at the pile of dead bodies. ‘I shall prepare a bed for you.’It was Odysseus’ turn to be dumbstruck. So cold a welcome after twenty years? Well, perhaps he was not the handsome husband she had sent away to war. Perhaps he was a disappointment to her. ‘Could I not sleep in my own bed?’ he asked timidly.‘Very well, I shall have it carried to the West Room. You will be comfortable there.’Odysseus clapped his hands. ‘Now I understand! You are testing me, lady! My bed is carved out of the strongest branch of the tree which stands in the centre of this house and which holds up its roof. How could it be moved “to the West Room”?’Then Penelope leapt across the dead suitors on the floor and kissed her husband and held him close. ‘After so long, I had[…]”

ODYSSEUS RETURNS!!

HOME FROM TROY!!

Odysseus returns from his 10 year voyage to Troy and a 10 year trip back! King of Ithaca has returned but what about the others? Are they alive, if so, where are they? “My crew, 500 men in 12 ships were left remaining after the war, but took shelter in a cyclops cave, Polythemus, but we orchestrated an elaborate trick, blinded him and left.” Odysseus said. He also told us how Posidon cursed them and how they ended up on the Laestrygonians island, the Laestrygonians were cannibals, ruled by King Lamus, and how they lost 451 men out of 500, 1 ship out of 12! After the atrocious assault, they arrived in Circe’s island who in fact turned the crew left into pigs, Odysseus on the other hand ate a white moly flower which was said to be the cure to most magic and poisons. But soon found out that Circe loved him but he didn’t love her back. “I have a wife already!” Odysseus said to Circe. In the end, she had to let him go after some years. They travelled to the Underworld to meet Terisias the Oracle, Odysseus finds out they Penelope, Odysseus’ wife was being pestered by suitors to have the crown and riches. Terisias tells him that 6 of his men will perish and not to eat the cattle on the Island of the Sun.

DEATH OR HOPE?

The crew were furious with Odysseus when they found out that Odysseus knew what would happen and didn’t tell them about it. They didn’t listen when Odysseus told them not to eat the cattle. In the end, no one of the crew was left alive except Odysseus. He found himself on Calypso, the sea nymph’s island. And Calypso also loved Odysseus, and offered him immortality if he loved her back but he refused! Athene who was watching Odysseus asked Zeus to tell Calypso to let Odysseus free and was convinced. “I was glad to be away from those women. what a mess they are.” Odysseus said. he was welcomed by King Alcinous and was sent home with Alcinous’ best rowing men. But sadly, when Odysseus arrived the rowing men, not Odysseus was turned to stone. Odysseus, horrified found Penelope still being pestered by the suitors, he happens to fire his bow, killing all of the suitors and was reunited with his wife and his kingdom.

                                                                ~~~|THE ODYSSEY|~~~
Newspaper article by Darren.
