Personality makeup, or lian pu, refers to facial designs for jing. It originated from daily life experience, describing such changes of expression as white for fear, red for shyness, dark for suntan, and sallow for illness. The facial designs for these roles are made by powdering, painting, and coloring in the basic forms of Zheng Lian, San Kuai Wa Lian, and Sui Lian. These types are widely used to represent officials, generals, heroes, gods and ghosts. Most facial designs attach great importance to the eyes and eyebrows. At the end of the Qing Dynasty stage lighting was used, and actors and actresses had to put on heavy makeup by using greasepaint rather than fine powder.

Chinese painting is one of the oldest artistic traditions in the world. The materials used in Chinese Guo Hua painting are brush and ink on paper or silk. Traditional painting involves essentially the same techniques as calligraphy and is done with a brush dipped in black ink or colored pigments; oils are not used. The finished work can be mounted on scrolls, such as hanging scrolls or handscrolls. Apart from techniques there are mostly three main subjects of Chinese painting: Figure painting became highly developed during the Tang dynasty, and landscape painting reached its height developed during the Song dynasty. This practice was written circa 550 CE and refers to ¨old¨ and ¨ancient¨ practices.

This set of instruments was presented to the museum´s founder, Charles Lang Freer. The brush has hair, holder and a sheath to cover the tip when not in use. The instick comes in a solid form either as a stick or a cake, and to produce ink the artist grinds an inkstick with water on the hard surface of an inkstone. The paper is commonly known in the west as ¨rice paper¨. bamboo, hemp fiber, and the bark of mulberry trees are the standard ingredients. Artists use the ink stone as a surface to grind the solid ink into liquid form and as a reservoir to hold the liquid ink once it is made.
