During the school year, high school students have the option of completing a hospitality short course or entering into a school-based apprenticeship/traineeship that will allow them to work for an employer, train towards a nationally recognised qualification, and complete their secondary school studies.

Career Taster programs are delivered one day per week for up to 10 weeks in term 2 2026. There is no cost for eligible year 10 students and does not impact VET in Schools (VETiS) entitlements. No formal qualification is awarded and no QCE credits will be awarded.

Places are very competitive and will book out quickly. Students who wish to apply to attend must speak with their parents, get a Unique Student Identifier (USI) number and meet our Guidance Officers in the Library at 8:45am Thursday 26th March, ready to complete the online application.

Enrolments open at 9am Thursday 26th March.

Students must be able to arrange their own transport to the relevant TAFE campus where the program is offered.

What does the program involve?

·     Completion of a Certificate IV in School Based Education Support (CHC40221), providing foundational theoretical knowledge and practical skills to support and facilitate student learning.

·     Attendance at South Bank TAFE one day per week over approximately 24 months.

·     Completion of a minimum of 100 hours of vocational placement in a partner primary school, working in classrooms from Prep to Year 4.

·     Working with an experienced mentor and supervisor in their host primary school. 

·     A clear pathway towards further study, including a Bachelor of Education, and potential employment as a Teacher Aide while completing tertiary studies.

The program will commence in Term 3, 2026 and conclude in Term 3, 2028.

Complete the CPP41419 Certificate IV while in school

Vocational Education and Training in Schools (VETiS) delivery of nationally recognised qualifications to school students, providing them with the skills and knowledge required for employment in specific industries. It focuses on students developing valuable industry-specific, work-related knowledge and skills and qualifications to help transition from school to work.

The REIQ Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice program can be undertaken in years 11 and 12, and can count towards the Queensland Certificate of Education.

About this course

This course is made up of 18 units of competency to be completed in 12 months. At the successful completion of this course Students will receive a CPP41419 Certificate IV in Real Estate Practice which will enable them (once they have turned 18) to apply for a real estate certificate of registration through the Office of Fair Trading. This course contains units of competency beyond the Registration course which will see you strengthen your knowledge in the Queensland real estate industry.

Energy Queensland (Ergon Energy Network and Energex) offers trade based work experience placements for high school students currently in Years 10, 11 or 12, or students completing a relevant course through TAFE.

Work experience is a great way to gain insight into our everyday work and to find out about the various jobs that exist within our organisation. Trade based work experience may provide a pathway to an apprenticeship.

All students should have a USI ready for when they wish to enrol in TAFE or other VET courses.

Six-week Civil Ready Program

where you can fast track to permanent employment and a full time Civil Apprenticeship Opportunity!

The program runs across August and September 2026, with selected students visiting working maritime businesses across the Port of Brisbane and South East Queensland. Participating employers are offering traineeship, apprenticeship, and entry-level employment positions to selected students who complete the program.

This is a genuine employment pathway and work experience opportunities. Students who are selected and perform well during the industry exploration visits will be considered for paid positions commencing from late 2026.

Expressions of interest are open now and close 1 July 2026. A maximum of 20 students will be selected across two groups.
