Person 3: Psychoanalytic Analysis of Passage from Macbeth

"Methought I heard a voice cry "Sleep no more! / Macbeth does murder sleep" --the innocent sleep, / Sleep that knits up the raveled sleave of care" (2.2.47-49).

Answer the following:

the speaker and the one spoken to (could be himself/herself) Macbeth is speaking to Lady Macbeth.

the context (what was happening at this point in the play) Macbeth had just ventured back to Lady Macbeth. Macbeth crying about the things he is imagining that people are crying out to him. Accusing him of killing Duncan. The guilt already getting to Macbeth minutes after having murdered Duncan.

Analyze this passage from the Psychoanalytic perspective. (Hint: What is Macbeth repressing?) The trauma and guilt is slowly taking over Macbeth's mind. His urge to be king and unconscious desires are hidden as the guilt takes over. The realization of the crime he just made not fully setting in his mind. The full understanding of the murder not resting in his brain as he imagines the different things crying out the reality of the crime he had committed.

Person 1: Why bother viewing literature through the Psychoanalytic perspective? Why should we still use it to analyze literature?

Through the psychoanalytic perspective, we can trace the very root of characters motives, or their demise. The brain contains all of the thoughts and means for every action one makes, so, being able to trace what is happening back to the origin can make the plot and story make more sense. Like in the case of Lady Macbeth, her demise can arguably be traced as far back as the loss of her child. It was a loss of power and her only companion, so therefore she becomes an isolated character and she wants the feeling and the power of motherhood so she exerts it over Macbeth, and mothers evil. Also her suppression of Duncans murder housed itself in her unconscious mind strengthening that part of her psyche ultimately dominating her conscious self eading to her demise.
