In the song, 'We're Not Gonna Take It', by heavy metal rock band Twister Sister, lead singer Dee Snider sings about fighting back and standing up for yourself. The lyrics, "Your life is trite and jaded, boring and confiscated, if that's your best, your best won't do" are parallel to "We but half express ourselves, and are ashamed of that divine idea which each of us represents." a quote from "Self-Reliance. These lyrics and quote are similar to each other because they both suggest how mediocre one's life can be if they do not act upon self-reliance.

Musician, artist, writer, and feminist Kathleen Hanna led the Riot grrrl movement, an underground feminist hardcore punk movement. It started in Washington, D.C., during the 1990s. The movement was targeted by those who didn't understand Kathleen's views of third-wave feminism, thinking that it was too risque and grown up rather than seeing it as a new form of traditional girl power. While fighting against gender-based discrimination, homophobia, and racism, Hanna interpreted her views through music.

"Whoso would be a man must be a nonconformist."
This visual representation of feminism through the popular phrase 'We Can Do It!" displays nonconformity of women towards society. While the original WW2 propaganda poster (Rosie the Riveter) was meant to boost 'worker morale' many people have seen it as a way to combat sexism and praise feminism. Feminism is a way of nonconformity through defying traditional gender roles and allowing us to do what we want despite how we identify.

"And we are now men, and must accept in the highest mind... let us advance and advance on Chaos and the Dark." The use of pronouns such as 'we' and 'us' suggest that Emerson wants to connect with the reader and how even though he is a decorated essayist, he understands how the reader feels and wants to express that.

The rebuttal in Emerson's quote about what it is a man does aids in helping the reader see another logical and rational side of things besides what is offered by Emerson.
