This month the Reading Group is reading from a selection of local gallery websites that feature an artist who is working in coastal landscapes.

The first artist that I want to look at is Robyn Harman. Robyn has a joint exhibition at Gallery Pejean in Launceston. I have included a link to Robyn's website as it shows the work in a larger format, as well as having a statement above the pics.

Printmaking in Painting?

In an email that Robyn sent me she mentions earlier work and using digital images using a printmaking method.
"Screen printing is where it started when I first had an exhibition at Sawtooth in Launceston 2015. I started doing RISO prints on paper then adding to it with black and white acrylic. I then tried doing the same thing on canvas but adding oil paint. Initially it was about using Google Earth images of coastlines in Tas where windsurfers were uploading their GPS tracks. I was more or less sailing vicariously with paint and being fairly truthful to their tracks. I've given up doing that now though but I've kept the digital technology with photographs of waves or rocks. The lines are still there in a different form."

TRACE & TRANSIT 2 A Port Dalrymple - is from the 2015 exhibition.

Zoe is an "emerging artist" who has a show at Despard gallery in Hobart.
Her work also has a coastal focus, Marawah on the NW coast, where Zoe grew up. Her work is abstract with large thick brush strokes and minimal detail. The places that she is depicting are not instantly recognisable, unless you know the area around Marawah well.

Jock Young is currently showing at Handmark in Hobart.
His style is a little more formal than Robyn and Zoe. Again he focuses on coastal scenes. There is a video link from the gallery page, it has some great insights as to artists who have influenced Jock.
