Shout out to Amber Hammond for allowing me to observe an excellent jigsaw lesson on The Outsiders. The atmosphere you have created for your students is warm and inviting. You bring such a gentle spirit to the classroom. I would have loved being a 7th grader in your class! I was particularly impressed by your classroom management. It’s clear you are well respected by your students.

I look forward to stopping by again soon!

JG

Shout out to Greta Johnson for allowing me to observe a GREAT analogies lesson! This was an engaging, fun, and interactive lesson for students to review/practice vocabulary words. Students completed "Analogy Stations" and it was great to see how the ELA Word Master words/analogies were taught in class! Mrs. Johnson is a WONDERFUL teacher and her students love her! :) Thank you again!

It is evident you are passionate and super knowledgeable about your content! Your students were engaged and connecting prior knowledge to current learning. They were also giving constructive feedback to eachother! You're a rockstar with those 8th graders!

Courtney Knight

Mrs. Shewmon drew in THRIVE artifacts to show her class the end goal for learning the day’s standard. Her calm and encouraging energy allowed students to feel safe to try anything she asked of them and some even asked some very good follow up questions. Modeling where student learning has been and where they are going was fun to watch - love the reference boards in the corner! ☺️ Thanks for your welcoming spirit!

Monica Laird

THE HAZEN SHOW

Y'all, get your popcorn ready if you ever get a chance to see the HAZEN show! Here are the notes that I sent her.

Students were all in their seats ready to go when the bell rang.

They worked independently and silently! during the TPDASTT warm up

I like the music that went along with the warm-up. Very soothing.

Planning ahead while they are working - moved Owen and Ivy Kate to another group for the next activity. Told him in a way that caused zero disruption for other students.

Impressive juggling a lot of things at once - Vince outside testing, stopped the warm-up short because everyone was finished. I like the use of the timer to give them a visual cue for the warm-up

Moved straight into the Kahoot after warm-up.

Only went over the vocab when they missed it. I was very impressed with how comfortable the student who missed the question was to talk about why he chose "hysterical" instead of "invigorated". It's clear that you have create an environment where students are not afraid of explaining why they messed up.

I've never seen kahoot facilitated so well! The kids were ALL IN on the competition. They worked together to get the right answer (Discourse!). You would ask students to explain why the answer was correct - randomly called on students.

"Hey friends, what happens if at least one person misses it?" Students - "We have to talk about it." They are used to discussing what they missed or why other students missed it.

It's clear that you have a superior command of your classroom. This class is full of characters that like to act out/disrupt, but you nipped it in the bud whenever students started to get off task.

Student was talking while you were talking (while explaining instructions for Farenheit 451 activity). You stopped talking and looked at the student. The student immediately stopped talking and even said "I'm sorry." Excellent use of non-verbal communication to get your point across.

Sincerely, Andrew Peake

SHOUT it out to Monica Laird!!

After a treacherous walk all the way to 2nd floor STEM, I was welcomed into Monica Laird's 8th grade math classroom! I really enjoy the lesson on volume of cylinders! She did such a great job explaining the WHY to students for WHY we DON'T use the pi button on our calculators when calculating volume of cylinders (or anything to do with circles for that matter)! Her guided notes packet was clear and loved the fact that there were two boxes provided: exact answer in terms of pi, and rounded answer using 3.14.

I also loved seeing my little 6th grade students GROWING up to be big 8th graders and GROWING in their understanding from what I taught them about area and volume in 6th grade. :)

-Katie Shewmon
