This program teaches students pronunciation, meaning, spelling, and usage.

This program is useful because many times, students with autism memorize sight words but may not know the proper pronunciation, meaning, or usage of the words and this app teaches all of these in an interactive, colorful format.

IXL covers hundreds of reading skills for each grade level beginning with reading foundations including phonemic awareness. For example, in kindergarten, students start by identifying letters, then move to letter sounds, rhyming, and short and long sounds before moving on to sight words.

This tool is useful because even though many learners with ASD can read many common sight words from memory, they often struggle to sound out unfamiliar words or comprehend their meaning. This program aids with both of these concepts.

Reading Bear allows students to hear a letter sound and practice sounding out words slowly and then quickly with a helper on the screen. Students then practice sounding out the word themselves using flashcards, audio sentences, or silent sentences.

This tool would be useful because it forces students to sound out and practice words many times. It also lets the students know whether they are saying the words correctly and allows them to take short quizzes to assess their learning. The scaffolding approach allows struggling learners to build on their learning and work at their desired pace.
