Feeling stigmatized or privileged..

I've felt stigmatized not always directly but indirectly. When people make jokes about depression or talk about it in a really poor manner, it hurts and makes me feel bad about myself. I've felt privileged being white, in how other races are discriminated against or not offered the same opportunities as me because of my race, like jobs.

This has shown me the great differences I have with others. Even if I don't feel them or want them. They are just automatically there, because of my several privileges. I try not to let them get in the way of others feelings about me or vice versa.

Dichotomization.. the process of dividing or opposing something into two parts.

This influences how I think of difference in a few ways. Growing up I was always taught or told that men can do somethings, like construction or mechanics, and women do others, like cooking and cleaning. It was always one or the other. It wasn't until I grew up I could see that they aren't exclusive to one gender. In fact, there are more than two genders. Also with sexuality, it's always seemed to be straightforward; gay or straight. And it isn't. A person can be both, or neither. And how a person acts doesn't depict them to be a certain thing either. A person's actions mean nothing to their sexuality.

Difference.. how people see things contrasting.. what separates us.. either by class, race, gender, or sex.. varies for everyone.

There are two perspectives that can help define difference. Constructionism says that our views are shaped by society and what we experience. Essentialism says things exist the same for everyone, not varied based on experience. I believe in the constructionist view. Everything we believe and do is based on what we go through.

My experiences with difference will make me work harder with clients or others in general to not be ignorant or show discrimination. I won't treat anyone contrasting to how I would treat myself, or want myself treated. I hope it will make me a better person and social worker that I can acknowledge my statuses and how others can suffer from not having them.
