El comercio ilícito, su caza para la obtención de su piel, (principalmente usada para diseños de moda) sus huesos utilizados en remedios medicinales y la destrucción masiva de su medio ambiente,  son problemas tan alarmantes, que el tigre, en todas sus variedades, está a punto de formar parte de animales extintos.

El tigre macho alcanza una longitud de 2.5 - 3.9 metros y un peso de 90-306 kg aproximadamente; tan solo la cola puede medir entre 60 y 100 cm. Las hembras son visiblemente más pequeñas y delgadas. Sus dientes son muy fuertes y largos, midiendo alrededor de 2.93 pulgadas.
