It was founded by Black Nova Scotians from different origins.  Many of them were former slaves, and were liberated by the Crown in the American Revolutionary War and the War of 1812. 
It began as a small population of about 50 people, and was originally known as the "Campbell Road Settlement".

Elevated land to the south of Africville protected it from direct impact and from some of the destruction caused to the neighboring communities.
However, they still sustained some considerable damage. 
Four Africville residents (and one Mi'kmaq woman who was visiting at the time) lost their lives to the explosion.
A global relief effort brought in millions of dollars to rebuild, but none of that money went to Africville.

Slaves and former slaves were recruited into war (for the British side) with a guarantee of their freedom afterwards. The British side lost the war, but they still had possession of Canada.
