Because of widespread resistance to a growing list of antimicrobial, the only recommended treatment for N. gonorrhoeae infection is dual therapy with ceftriaxone and azithromycin. A large proportion of gonorrhea infections are complicated by infections with another sexually transmitted disease, and multi-drug treatment has the added benefit of generally resolving these infections as well.

This human pathogen is a gram-negative, flattened cocci, arranged as diplococci. It is identified by the gram-negative diplococci in the neutrophils. Gonoccoccus tends to remain alive after being engulfed by neutrophils, their appearance in urethral, vaginal, cervical, or eye exudates is presumptive evidence of infection. The disease can be confirmed by biochemical and DNA testing. This pathogen is also very rarely motile and non-spore-forming.
