Louis XVI-
- - He was unable to effectively rule iwhen he became King in 1774, and was very shy, proving to be weak in a constitutional monarchy. This was especially bad in the time of high French debt.
- He was a high profile victim in the French Revolution, and ruled France from 1774-1793. He was the subject of debate between Girondins and the subject between Jacobins and whether or not he was to be executed. Some radicals wanted to keep the monarchy but keep it a constitutional monarchy, whereas others wanted to move the revolution even further.
Napoleon Bonaparte-
- After joining with his army in March 1796, he led them into a series of victories and in April he wins victories in Austria. The king of Sardinia also gives up territory to Napoleon. He conquers Venice and in 1797, sets up a new provisional democracy. He plans to capture Egypt to hinder England, and captures Alexandra and sets up his own government there.
- After leading his army into Russia in 1812, he tracks deeper into Russia due to the Russia army retreating whenever Napoleon's army advanced. After the army tried to turn back, they lost heavily.
Maximilien de Robespierre-
- After Louis XVI died in 1793, he started the Reign of Terror, and the main goal of it was to prevent counter-revolution, as revolutionary ideas started to build. People who barely talked about opposition of the revolution were executed. The Reign still had revolutionary values, like the right to a trial, but fairness in trials were hardly exhibited.
- He was the leader of the Committee of Public Safety, the executive committee of the National Convention, was very powerful in France. However, the Jacobins grew tired of and felt threatened by him and sent him to the guillotine on 1794.
Georges Danton-
- He was originally for not killing the king, and went great lengths to try and spare him, but eventually voted for his death.
- He was part of the Jacobin club, but was mainly focused on waging war whereas Robespierre was focused on threats in Paris. In December 1791, he was elected as second assistant to the public prosecutor of the Paris Commune.
- In September, he was elected as deputy for the Paris to the National Convention, but was taken down by the Girondins when they demanded he render an accounting when he left his job as minister of justice. After this, his reputation fell.
Olympe de Gouges-
- In 1491, she published her manifesto, Declaration of the Rights of Woman. It was in response to the Declaration of the Rights of Man, and advocated for women being equal to men in all things, and that they should have the same legal rights. The pamphlet also said that children out of wedlock should have fair opportunity in inheritance matters. She might have been seen as a radical, fighting for women's rights, where liberals generally limited freedom to men, but sided with the moderate Girondins.
-In 1793, she was arrested, had a mock trial, and was executed at the guillotine at November 4, for supposedly being counter-revolutionary.
