The Main idea is that the new technology came with new tactics for fighting and more casualties due to more shots fired. According to the article "rifles had a much greater range than muskets... weapons that could fire more than one bullet before needing to reload... hydrogen filled passenger balloons... telegraph enabled Lincoln to monitor battlefield reports." So basically all of these innovations brought new tactics including longer range skirmishes and scouting out enemy camps in balloons along with more death because of longe range firing and more than one shot before reloading.

The main idea is that the battle showed that the war would be a long and tough war. According to the article "its outcome sent northerners who had expected a quick, decisive victory reeling." This is telling how expectations changed because if they could lose a battle like this then the war would not be quick and easy.

Even with a greater population and control of the seas the north couldn't quickly beat the south because of the south's will to fight and fighting on their land. According to the article "the Union had to invade, conquer, and occupy the south." With this in mind the south had home field advantage most of the war and had a higher moral because of fighting for their way of life.

Public support was obtained from winning battles because victories are what people wanted to hear. According to the article "Lincoln learned early on that the public viewed war in terms of battles won and lost." So in order to win public support the best way was to go for victories without concern of the amount of men you will lose because all the people will think is another union victory.

Both sides saw the other as the aggressor. According to Bragg " your president has decided on war," but according to Hunt "I hear much desire of your people for a fight. I have heard but one northerner express such a desire, andi it met with rebuke." After reading these two letters it is safe to say that both sides saw the other as the aggressor because of the information they were given.
