On June 22, 1940, the French government signed an armistice with Nazi Germany just six weeks after the Nazis launched their invasion of Western Europe. Germany now had conquered most of central Europe and turned their focus towards conquering Britain.

A little past 8 p.m., British military units were alerted with the code name “Cromwell,” meaning the German invasion had begun. A state of emergency broke out in England; even home defense units were put to the ready. They would fight. Britain required citizens to have nationwide blackout during this time by covering doors and windows with curtains or cardboard in order to not let any light escape. They did that so German planes had more difficulty finding their targets. This bombing “blitzkrieg” (lightning war) would continue until May 1941.

With Germans fortified along the entire French coast, Hitler's highly boasted "Fortress Europe" seemed to be difficult to crack. The US Broke through on June 6 1944 D-Day: The Invasion of Normandy. On June 6, 1944 the Allied Forces of Britain, America, Canada, and France attacked German forces on the coast of Normandy, France. With a huge force of over 150,000 soldiers, the Allies attacked and gained a victory that became the turning point for World War II in Europe.

General Alfred Jodl, representing the German High Command, signed the unconditional surrender of both east and west forces in Reims, France, which would take effect the following day. This ended the six year war in Germany and now it was time for Europe to find the horrendous things Nazis did in the Holocaust.
