She loved the idea of falling down a rabbit hole, of plummeting into something that she wasn't expecting" (16).

Maya is 15 years old and is the youngest out of the 3 siblings. She was adopted into a family full of red heads and often time feels like she does not belong. Growing up, Mayas adoptive parents have always fought behind closed doors, but over time the arguments got louder and became not so private. Maya and her sister Lauren have struggled with her mom being an alcoholic and their parents getting divorced, but they got through it together. Maya is very adventurous, caring, stubborn, protective, talkative, and has a tendency to make everything about herself.

Grace was adopted by very loving and supportive parents who raised her as an only child. She gave birth to her baby Peach that she had to put up for adoption. This caused Grace to become depressed and often times anxious. Sadness and loneliness followed Grace after she gave away her daughter. Grace finally started to feel happy and safe again when she started bonding with her two siblings. Grace is extremely kind, caring, brave, and strong. She cares about her loved ones so much, and is very protective over them.

Readers start to realize this while reading into his past in pages 122-156. This doubt and self-doubt is what causes conflict in his relationships, such as the break up with Birdie and the fight with Mark and Linda. In the duration of the book, he struggles with coming to a decision of allowing Mark & Linda to adopt him because of the underlying mistrust within himself; it makes him reluctant to allow Mark and Linda’s adoption to go through.

Joaquin's therapist, Ana gives him advice about his sisters and his foster parents. Ana tells Joaquin "You can't just push family away. You're always going to be connected to them" (131). Ana knows Joaquin has a past of pushing people away, and she doesn't want him to do this to the people who actually love and care for him. She tells Joaquin the truth even if he doesn't want to hear it. Joaquin appreciates this and it makes him look at his relationships from a different perspective. It makes him realize that the people in his life really do care for him and he needs to value these relationships as much as they do. He now understands that he needs to keep them in his life and not push them away like everyone else.

There was no missing the wobble in Claire's voice when she said, 'You can't just keep opening and closing this door, saying nothing to me then texting me in the middle of the night. Shit, Maya, you broke my heart.'"
(317) This quote results from when Maya texted Claire to meet up the night before they she goes to look for her birth mom. She tells Claire everything and Claire makes her realize that she is more like Joaquin than she thought. She pushes away the people she loves the most but doesn't realize she is doing it.

Throughout the book, Joaquin talks about his old foster family who were going to adopt him like Mark and Linda want to. We hear the name Buchanans over and over again throughout the story and the negativity that comes along with it. We know that he is traumatized by that family, but we don’t get to know what happened until later in the novel. This is reinforced throughout the story to ensure that the reader understands there is a reason why Joaquin does not want to be adopted. His past traumas have created trust issues that he has too soon overcome. (171)

So after punching Adam and running to the bathroom she surprised that someone talked to her inside despite her having a runny nose and bruised hands looking disheveled from head to toe Raf still took time to talk to her and it made grace day slightly better.
