My thought are that Kids need afterschool activates so that they can have fun after having a hard day at school. The pandemic caused a lot of fun things for kids at school to be canceled so now they don't have anything too do. But at the same time is important for everyone too be safe so I can understand that. In the text it uses "In New York City, as in much of the rest of the country, the pandemic made those golden hours go dark, as sports were suspended" This shows how much was taken away from the kids. I know its hard but at the same time your safety comes first-Mayah Durham

I would say that we are all not alone during this hard times of the pandemic & I understand how students are not as inspired to move on and perform well in school. However, like I said we are all going through the same process. Even though we lost contact with our friends & are not as active, we know the restrictions were necessary. To add into what some of the students argued on the article, I understand how public organizations are a way to "have fun" & "escape from reality". Nevertheless, the pandemic is not a disease we are able to control & that is fine. For me personally, I would look at the situation with a positive mindset like how most colleges are test optional & how I get to spend more time with my family.

Although the pandemic may bring families closer together, it has also disrupted the daily routine of millions of people. When it comes to kids, we are locked inside the house for most of the day & we don't really have a time where we can just relax with our friends. For me personally, the pandemic has been rough because I don't enjoy staying in the house but I also have to think about other factors. After school activities and just hanging out may have been an "escape from reality," but is that escape really worth it when you have a virus out in the world that anybody can catch at any moment? I know everyone may be dealing with this pandemic differently, but the thing that keeps me going is realizing that hard times don't last forever.

The pandemic has drastically caused almost everything to be done virtually or not at all. It has also took a toll on younger individuals both academically and socially. For me, on a personal level, the pandemic has not affected me like how it did for others. But I do feel like it is good that the city is willing to do something to bring back the extra activities for children. This shows how people are not just focused on the economic crisis that the pandemic caused.

Due to the pandemic many activities have been stopped. Although this pandemic is oddly bringing people together it is also tearing people apart. This pandemic makes it difficult to have a fun time with friends because there is simply nothing to do. Also due to this pandemic things are difficult with learning everything online. Learning online and may not getting the visual needed to understand a topic is hard. This causes children to have to work harder in school. And working Harding in school because that’s the only way you’ll understand a topic is draining. Children need something after school to relax not just to sit in the house.

my thoughts are due to the pandemic a lot of sacrifices has been made and though we aren't happy to be in this situation it was indeed necessary to take a step back and observe the situation. there are pro's and cons to this whole situation and I do believe at some point we all need to step foot back outside because we cant remain living in fear. the pros that I've personally experienced was social distancing myself for a peiod of time, having time to self reflect and journey my inner being, experience online classes to know whether or not it's for me, and make money while im out of school. the cons i experienced was the loss in motivation for school, built up stress, and restrictions from certain things. the pandemic has an unusual effect that everyone can learn from but again there is a time to sit and observe and a time to get back in the real world and let your body do what its made to do (fight off germs).

One take away I got from this article is that everyone in some aspect misses how things normally was before the pandemic started. This took a toll on a lot of highschooler after school activities and their plans for the next school years. Some students may have used these after school activities for homework help and getting their grade up, others a peaceful place where they can be stress free away from home and school, or just to even get to practice the sports they play it was just apart where students could get away from all the stress and negative vibes, but now it's been taking from them and they want that time between school and home now more than ever.

So far what I've read it seems like children need activities more than you think, it's even worse that we don't have school and dont socialize as much anymore taking away those activities make it even less approachable. These really show me how much I missed school as well because I used to do volleyball after school everyday I created bonds with people and not have to be home so quick after school and sometimes I would get help with work after school with my peers that all stopped later on , the point is kids our age need something to do after school anywhere.

The daily routines people liked to do had to be canceled and it showed how people can handle quick change. In the article, it talked about a guy named Adrian and how he used to go workout with his friends and he couldn't because of covid and he had to go to an open field because everything is closed. he couldn't even go all the time due to the weather and it being so cold and its a big deal for him because if he wouldn't, he wouldn't have known how he would've managed through the quarantine. "Without that, it would’ve been very, very tough on me to go through all these months without going to school.

Life before the pandemic is now just a memory to most people, especially kids. We were able to go out and congregate with others, visit parks in groups, go out to eat without the worry of reservations being filled or the restaurant being delivery only. There were no worries about masks or vaccines, just living in the moment. But now... life as we know ceases to exist. There's practically nothing to do because places are either shut down, online, or there is limited place. This puts kids who relied on the outside world to escape what's going on at home, in a cornered space. No more being able to express themselves freely or avoid the abuse they endure at home. There is a reason why so many kids stay out so late and now with the pandemic, they are forced back in that scare of panic and isolation.

Before the pandemic life was pretty simple but now it's kind of boring and redundant with everything being online and all. I feel like the lack of after-school activities makes things even worse because there's nothing to look forward to at the end of the day.

My thought after reading the New York Times article is that the pandemic has changed many teenagers from distractions used to be able to live and cope everyday. For example many people used to hang with their friends after school by going to the park or more which is something teenagers need right now in order to get rid of the loneliness from not socially interacting with people. One of my main takeaways is that life can change at any moment unexpected.I say this because we were in school one day and out of nowhere 1 whole year passed without attending leading people to change.By change i mean going from being happy to having anxiety due to those distractions they had before not being there anymore.

This pandemic has done nothing but putting stress on both parents and children. Especially when it comes down to learning kids seems to be more engaged in person learning then online learning. These new changes have a major impact on their mental health as well as their social life depleting slowly. For examples: staying home makes a person lazy, to get up and go to class or even put an effort into completing assignments. Rather than staying in the house to protect themselves they seek a way out just to hang with friends. It’s easier with in person learning because at least everything is organized and majority of the kids have a lot of chances to make up work in order for them to not stay back.It also shows the result of how poorly these new changes to the society some what destroys the mindset of graduating and going off to college because certain parents can’t afford it due to unemployments. New changes brings new consequences in which doesn’t strike till later in life.

During covid-19 there’s been a lot of change. Kids can’t learn the same as they learned in school. Things have changed the way we live in society. There’s not much freedom because as there used to be because of how covid killed many young people. During covid-19 people quarantined and there were curfews and lockdowns. One example is like in Newark many kids lost interests of school due to depression and stress. It has affected the the whole community in a negative way from people reaching success.

After reading this article and these children's stories you realize how important those "golden hours" were. I feel like kid got it the worse when the pandemic hit. We lost school, sports, clubs, hanging out, gatherings, etc. We had to learn how to learn through a screen, No actual human contact to our peers, no escape, no anything. One thing I learned was that school was my escape from home, like many other kids. On top of everything parents really don't understand what we are going through. They think it is so easy because we are home but what they don't see is that most teachers doubled their workload and have given us a shorter time period to get it done. Not everyone can make that shift, a lot of us are hands on learners and need to be in a class. I can name many students including myself who have gone from honor roll students to C's and F's. Most of us don't have and type of motivation . Now lets get into how freshmen and seniors got it worse. Freshmen got their whole freshmen year online meaning they will go into sophomore year with an eighth grade mindset. For the seniors were holding on by a strand. Depending on what state you're in the most you are going to get is a diploma in the mail. There are so many things that this pandemic has changed, and this will go down in history.

First, I would like to point out how I deeply I related to every individual and all their different stories. I believe that high schoolers especially upcoming juniors and us seniors were heavily impacted by the pandemic because for a lot of us it is our last for most things. Our last time as friends together before we move far, the last time for us to be kids and young adults before we are officially embraced with bills and realities. I agree with meril, who stated that the best way she will take care of herself was through extracurriculars. I had a lot of extracurriculars after school that helped me differentiate school work from other things I was passionate about and I feel like that is what I miss the most

My thoughts after reading the New York Times article is that people have lost some of their freedom. When the pandemic was not around, you would see multiple different activities that were available for everyone to do and made some people feel more alive. Now, this pandemic has not only trapped us in a square but when we are finally released, we can not do the things that we were so accustomed to. The two stories that really resonated with me were the Adrian Rosales and the Patrick Amoyaw stories because they are both sport stories and I really like sports. That was not the only reason though. It was also because I was planning to play basketball this year after not playing last year but it was canceled.

All students are at a point where it’s like when will this be over and when will life go back normal. This article really showed that it’s people who value different things than I do and these things stopped for them during the pandemic as well. The first girl’s question was “What is the whole point of opening up schools if you can’t go to the library?” and though I don’t attend the library, I understand her confusion. We don’t want partial normal, we want 100% normal. It like now we leave the normality at home and it’s mask on, covid restrictions everywhere else.

For example there have been plenty of time where we, as students, are literally fed up to the point of never going to school again but the after school activities is what pushed us to get up in the morning. I’m empathize with the students in the article because before covid, there were things to do after school but not many that students rely wanted to do but not post covid there ... nothing

There's really absolutely little to do during this pandemic, making it impossible to have lots of fun. Studying everything online has now been complicated as a result of the pandemic. It's difficult to learn online because you don't have the digital tools you need to master a concept. Kids are required to learn discipline in school as a result of this. It's also exhausting to work studied harder because it's the only way you'll learn a subject.

I feel like kids nowadays we feel like we're alone especially kids that don't have friends outside of school and they won't be able to see there friends because school is shut down and there parents are not letting them go outside because of Cov-id. But through my experience I feel like this is making me tougher and adapt to other ways to do things. The pandemic affected everyone, COVID-19 has changed all aspects of our lives. Though there's a pandemic i believe you can still have fun but be very safe, sanitize your hands, social distance and also wear a mask. Our lives were pretty much normal before this whole pandemic stuff, some of us might have lost contact with friends and family, I personally did not because I didn't care but because I isolated myself and focused on me and the ones i live with. Now going to the remote learning, some students enjoy online whether than in person or it can be the other way.

My overall view of the article is that there are going to be more children growing up with obesity or health concerns. So much as walking after school with your friends makes a child active enough in their young age especially going to school and having gym class or recess. This article exposes that modern day kids, if they don't go back to school, will suffer with being more active. And for children who want to be active or play a sport in their later years can suffer. Such as boys who want to be basketball or football players. Or girls who want to be cheerleaders or track stars, it is going to be harder because in their younger years they were not active. Walking to the bus stop will soon become a huge challenge if these students do not become more active during this pandemic.

Some kids like physical school in order to interact with other students thats there friends and learn. Now its just sit down, wake up, open lap top for a whole day. Being in our homes takes away all the joy to kids and no one likes it. Kids walk after school, have lunch and talk to there peers face to face and the laptop doesn't really help. Personally from my own experiences its hard to wake up and open this lap top. If we had in school I have time to get my energy up. Covid messed everything up and kids can't be on these laptops like everything is okay because its not.

Even though the pandemic has changed our social life, it has not changed the purpose of life. Trips, prom graduation, and even outside activities we do with our friends we’re at a halt because of the pandemic. For me I feel like the pandemic definitely hit hard for me because of my grades. As a student that doesn’t always want to do work but wants to do the best in class I really have a hard time doing work from home because... well it’s home and I can never focus. This also frustrates me because this weight was dropped on us and it’s not even our fault yet we are expected to just power through it which is very unfortunate but we all have to do what we have to do to succeed and this pandemic has given me a perspective on life that will definitely motivate me to make money.

The lack of school activities has put an extra burden on the students. Even though schools are trying to make it accessible through the virtual platform, it still doesn't feel the same. We are already in front of the screen for hours on end (both during school hours and homework time) which is not healthy so adding that extra hour for virtual recreational time is futile. To the point of the student in the article that said, "The best way to take care of myself through extracurriculars. I feel like a part of myself has been erased," I agree with her because there are so many students that only value school for the extracurriculars. Personally, extracurriculars helped take care of me physically. Moving around, laughing with people and doing activities kept my body fit and at a good weight. Due to the pandemic, my body has changed because I am home all the time but extracurriculars can be a facet of one's identity in some way, shape or form.

Life before the pandemic was considered normal. School was in, everyone was physically moving, social life was better, and things never felt alone. During the pandemic, a lot has happened. We lost very important people who were close to us, and who weren't close to us too. The pandemic has also had a negative impact on the mental health of many teenagers.

Life before the pandemic was normal because as a whole we were more involved. It is now the new norm to be less involved and more at home. We were all more physical and it was a more safe and efficient way to stay healthy by getting your activities outside or even talking to a friend. Now it's more healthy/ better to stay home. There is more stress on many of us mentally

One thing i took away from this article was the fact that the pandemic shows how caught up we were in depending on other places and technology. The pandemic forced everyone to go back into survival mode and learn how to make the most of life with what seemed like nothing. Though it may seem like some of our favorite things have been snatched from us, we fail to realize that there are many ways that we can recreate some of these activities.

Because of the pandemic, almost everything is now done digitally or not at all. It has also had a negative impact on young people's academic and social lives. On a personal level, the pandemic has not had the same effect on me as it has on others. However, I believe it is commendable that the city is willing to take steps to restore the extra activities for children. This illustrates that people aren't primarily concerned with the pandemic's economic implications.

I agree with the kids in the article completely. Before the pandemic, I had after school activities that I looked forward to and loved doing. I was on the step team from my freshman year until my junior year. It was my favorite activity and I enjoyed being with my friends and making memories. The pandemic took that away from us and I believe that it has a negative impact on myself and other students who looked forward to it. These golden hours are important because they give us something to look forward to and to build relationships and memories. However, since everything is virtual, the human aspect and interaction with others from after school programs is taken away.

The pandemic immediately affected students, especially high school students. Extracurricular activities snatched away & any type of person to person interaction. As a student athlete, this article resonated to me because my whole life changed after the pandemic, things that I were looking forward to were snatched away from me. And I feel like the places where you participate in school outside of class plays a big role in your high school experience and because of COVID, a lot of things weren’t able to happen. So I do agree with the article when they say students lives take a drastic turn.

As a founder of a club, I truly understand the sorrow of the extracurricular activities being ripped away from students. In school my entire senior year was ripped from me I truly understand. And in the article they stated " But they mentioned nothing about the library. What’s the whole point of opening up schools if you can’t go to the library?" this goes to show that life has altered right before our eyes. Things are trying to open back up but they are not the same. We need to open back up when things can completely open back up.
