Energy. Mr. Rogers moves kinetically the entire period, using tone and repetition and dramatic pauses and rhetorical questions to keep the students connected to the lesson. He also calls on kids by first name, oftentimes cold-calling on them to keep them on their toes.

Music plays as students enter, creating a space that mirrors his personality...funky.

Telegraph assessment: at one point the instructor told the students the essay question they will get on the next test. From there, he could start to build the answer, piece by piece, so everyone knows what they are doing and why.

Observation of Mr. Sutphin's Class

I sat in Mr. Sutphin's 2nd period sophomore epistemology class on Jan. 14th. Here are a few observations:

Mr. Sutphin presents confidentally and comfortably to the class. His instructions are clear and concise and the positive energy he models influences the class... their responses and their energy. Several warm-up exercises (kinesthetic, communal, meditative) were used to open the session. Students were very open and participatory. Impressive indeed.
Lesson involved students devising a conspiracy theory explaining why there has been a nationwide cell phone ban in schools. Student groups presented in front of the entire class... discussing their theory and offering "evidence" supporting their claim.
Evidentiary presentation, while wild and outlandish, allowed students to be aware of, analyze, discuss and be critical of questionable and/or false information. Epistemological topics involved confirmation bias, Occam's razor, fallacy biases, etc..
Presentations also required students to utilize visual presentations (video, Google Slides, etc..) effectively. Particularly the use of 'deep fake' video of LeBron James and Kim Jong Un kissing!

Overall, lesson idea and design was very effective in both engaging AND teaching the targeted lesson. Class discussions were participatory and displayed high levels of subject matter knowledge. Mr. Sutphin was very skilled in guiding and reinforcing the salient points, keeping analysis focused and moving, AND keeping the students in the center of the learning dynamic. Great Class!
