In Look Both Ways the short stories all have a revolving theme of friendship. In Low Cuts Strike Again, They are bonded through all their parents having cancer. All of them are resilient through tough times and are able to persevere and learn in what they have done. (Reynolds 22) "And it was this, not the cancer but the strain it put on everyone, that formed the Low Cuts. They all cut their hair down to almost bald-a sign of solidarity-and started stealing".

In Five Things Easer The difference in size show how they come together their size makes them the least expected to become friends. In the story it refers to Simon size. (Reynolds 97) "Simon Cross was big for his age, like 2 kids tall and 2 kids wide." And it refers to Kenzi's size (Reynolds 98) "Kenzi Tompson was small for his age, like tied for smallest kid in his class named Bit." This friendship is really shaping personality of each kid, both are so opposite. A friendship is born by them helping each other out each day with their own personal traits and mismatches.

In Low Cuts Strike Again, Bit is a leader who shows no mercy. He will and does punch anyone who get in his way or disrespects him. He is also a very friend based person who would do anything for his friends, or to defend his friends. (Reynolds 23) "And when it came to temper. He was known for knocking people out. There was this kid named Tray who was picking on John John because of the patch of gray hair on the front of his head." This is explaining all about the fact that Bit is a good friend, and he only get mad unless someone offends him. Throughout the story we get to learn more bout him though. For example we learn why he is so mean. His mom has cancer. This effects him deeply and he is taking his anger and frustration out on other people while protecting himself and friends.

In Water Booger Bears, their are multiple literary devices the one that stood out the most was "Friendship Flags". These friendship flags are also referred to as "Litter of Love". Are empty Chettos bags that are meant to symbolize notes saying I miss you in Chetto dust. (Reynolds 3) "Trash... Yes. But Jasmine and TJ called them freindship flags. Because Jasmine was gone for awhile they were practically notes that said "I miss you in Chetto dust".
