The kite that Amir flew and that Hassan caught is a symbol of Amir's pride, or his selfishness. When he turns the corner in the alley and sees Hassan captured by Assef, he immediately looks for the blue kite. Instead of being mostly concerned about Hassan's safety, he scans the blue kite to see if there are any rips in it. To preserve the kite, the winning kite, is more important to Amir. He wants to take the kite back to Baba to make Baba proud. The blue kite will prove that he's a winner and undoubtedly make Baba proud of him. So maybe it represents Baba's expectations of Amir, and the lengths that Amir will go to to earn Baba's approval.
