There has been a major shift in educational learning goals, as most recently seen in Goal 4.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals, focusing on education for global citizenship and education for sustainable development. The change refers to the recognition of the need for education systems to provide students with skills such as problem solving, collaboration, critical thinking and communication. The focus on these "21st century goals" is visible in educational and curriculum reform, and has been fostered by the global discussion on changing work and societal needs. This document describes global, regional and national examples of this change and then focuses on implementation challenges. The document focuses more explicitly on the issue of assessment, but states that any major reform in a change in educational philosophy must ensure alignment between the areas of curriculum, pedagogy, and assessment. The document identifies several challenges for the implementation of this educational change. These include the need for a clear understanding of the skills required, beyond the mere identification of definition and description. This is essential if education systems are to reform curricula to integrate the new learning objectives that skills entail.

These skills that children need to learn in order to thrive into the future refer to: CREATIVITY to think through the information in new ways, to make new connections and to find innovative solutions to different problems; CRITICAL THINKING to analyse all the information; COMMUNICATION to understand everything and share it clearly with other people; and COLLABORATION to learn the meaning of teamwork and learn how to work in groups with other people.

Creativity: by promoting creativity in our lessons we help students to be innovative and learn new things in a different way. They are capable of expressing themselves, solving  problems and communicating freely.

Critical thinking: we should allow our students to be critical so as to analyse all types of information.

We, as teachers of the 21st century learners need to prepare our students for the future.

We need to nurture their creativity and critical thinking

Parents are the primary educators of their children. 

It´s important that educators, parents and children work together as a team. 

We need to engage our students in the most important skill: how to learn.

It´s important that we prepare our students to develop a more collaborative learning process.

They need a responsable adult (teacher or parents) that provide them guidance through their lives as students.

It’s important that the environment where they study (at school or at home) nurtures the learner to inquire, take risks, collaborate, engage and enjoy. It’s important that students learn in different places.

They also need to have their social and emotional needs taken care of before any academic can actually occur.
