The mouth of the Singapore River was the old Port of Singapore, being naturally sheltered by the southern islands. Historically, the city of Singapore initially grew around the port so the river mouth became the centre of trade, commerce and finance. To this day, area around the old Singapore River mouth, the Downtown Core, remains the most expensive and economically important piece of land in Singapore.

From the picture in Source 1, I can infer that in the 18th century, Singapore grew to be a busy port.
This can be seen by the picture of the Singapore River in the year 1860, it shows many 'trading' ships being crowded in the Harbour of the Singapore River.
From all this, I can infer from the source that in the 18th century Singapore was a busy trading port for traders that were passing by. This can be supported by the picture of the Harbour of the Singapore River.

The mouth of the Singapore River saw the beginnings of an ancient fishing village, Temasek, later renamed Singapura (in Malay means "Lion City") by Sang Nila Utama, and in modern times founded by Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles in 1819. The Orang Laut ("Sea-Gypsies") were the earliest known inhabitants in the area around the river mouth. In 1818 Temenggong Abdul Rahman arrived from Rhio with his followers and set up a village by the left bank of the river mouth. On that same bank one year later in 1819, he signed the historic treaty with Sir Thomas Stamford Raffles.

The most famous river in Singapore, aslo fondly known as "The River", the Singapore River spans 3.2 km from the sea to it's upper reaches in Kim Seng Road. The Boat Quay banks in 1823 were first to have offices, wharehouses, godowns and jetties; then subsequent developments continued up-river, along the banks of Clarke Quay, Robertson Quay, and later even further upstream, near the upper reaches and theSource of the Singapore River.

From the extract in Source 4, i can infer that the Singapore River is a famous river and well-known to fellow Singaporeans. I can also infer from the Source that since 1823, the Singapore River has been a busy port ever since.
I can support my inference by the extract that states that the Singapore River is a "famous" River in Singapore.
I can also support my inference by the extract that states The Boat Quay was first to have offices, that meant the Singapore River has already been a trading port since then.
From all of the above, i can infer that the Singapore River has already been famous and also had been a trading port since 1823.

The merlion has also been build in those days, and it still remains.
Alot of people must have went there since there were shophouses backthen but there are malls now. The olden days is not as advance as the modern days.
