I think that the difference between Ratliff's distance chapter and this closeness one is that this chapter isn't really talking about the measurement of how far the sounds sound within in the music, but rather how close the people playing the music are. He talks a lot about how singers sing in harmony and try to make their notes close to the other notes being played, or the example with the two drums, he talks about how they stay close to each other sounds. The noises they make are relatively the same. So instead of talking about how far/close the music is to the listener, he is talking about how far/close the notes are within the actual song. I agree with Ratliff that it does have an effect on music. The closeness of the notes and people singing/playing the songs make it an easier, more pleasant listen.

Ratliff talks about this song for a good chunk of the chapter. He mainly focuses on the singing and how John Lennon and Paul McCartney sing this harmony throughout the whole song with the "whao ha"s and this karaoke version that i've included lets you hear it more clearly. It isolates these parts of closeness.

This is another example of closeness with harmonies. When she sings the course and the background singers join in in a lower range, I think that shows off this idea of closeness opposed to just distance of sound within a song.
