This means when asking the student to complete a task, the directions should be clear and very specific. It is important to not use metaphors or sarcasm because they will take things literal.

Use positive reinforcement: Positive reinforcement can encourage effective communication(Communication Strategies for Parents of Children with Autism, 2024).

When using positive reinforcement, you should provide immediate positive feedback so the students understand their efforts are appreciated. Students with Autism will want to continue making positive growth in communicating when they get positive reinforcements. This can be as simple as a hug, verbal praise, or tangible items of reinforcement.

Provide opportunities for peer interactions: ie: group activities or partner work.

This strategy allows for students to use and practice their communication skills in social settings. It teaches students how to communicate with other peers in multiple areas of their social development.

Speech-generating devices: designed to enhance communication, speech, and quality of life (Devices Overview, n.d.).

Students are able to speak into a tablet and it generates their statement or need into a sentence. This is helpful when students struggle to formulate sentences for others to understand their needs.

Text to speech: When students do not have the skills to formulate words or sentences, the text to speech device allows them to push a picture or text a word and the device will speak it aloud for others to understand what the student is needing.
