According to a conversation by Prince Leopold, the heir to the throne of Belgium and future king asserts that European boundaries can no longer effectively spread in Europe unless they start colonizing African territory (Doc 1). This supports the concept of Imperialism and its benefit of political prosperity for European powers. Belgium however, was not the only country politically motivated in increasing their country's competence. According to a speech to the House of Commons regarding the Suez Canal, Benjamin Disraeli, the British Prime Minister advocates imperialization of African territory in order to reinforce the British empire. speech to the House of Commons

regarding the

Suez Canal,

Prince Leopold is talking about the significance of Belgium becoming an Imperial power. Leopold stated that since everyone thinks that colonies are helpful in showing off a countries prestige; Belgium should have a colony of their own. (Doc.1) Therefore, Belgium was politically motivated because they wanted to show off their prestige to other great Imperial powers. In addition, a speech given by Benjamin Disraeli, the British Prime Minister. Disraeli argues that Britain should colonize for political and strategic reasons rather than economic(Doc.2). Hence, Britain should be more politically and strategically motivated to control more land.

They wanted to lead the progress of the land and people (Doc 1). The motivation was that they wanted to dominate to own the lands. Prince Leopard is a conservative and he still wants more power and that is one reason he wants to help out the uncivilized people in the lands. Another similar topic of taking control over territories of these backward peoples who are unable to develop the wealth of their land is explained in a speech that was given by Martial Henri. According to Martial Henri Merlin, governor general of French, in Equatorial Africa, gave a speech about how they went to territories to take control over them and gain more power (Doc 6).
