Paragraph 1:
In the book Search and Destroy by Dean Hughes, we go on a war journey through a young soldiers eyes. While this book is fiction, the author used the help of real Vietnam war generals to get the war text as accurate as possible. Rick, the main character is faced with a self issue, he can't seem to find the answer to. Rick feels that he has lost who he is and that hes loosing people he cares about because of it. he used to think that he had his looks going for him and that he would play off that and just kind of go with the flow. Rick soon came to realize that wasn't going to work when his girlfriends broke up with him because he had no direction in life, she was upset with him for wasting his intelligence on such foolish things and foolish people. " Rick you are smart, you're not like those other fools that you hang around with. You are going somewhere, unlike them" ( Hughes, 12) Rick then decides that he will enlist in the army in hopes to find out who he truly is and to become a "man" and hopefully make his father happy and proud of him, which he highly doubts will happen. He then fins out that war not only didn't help him find the answer, it harmed him both physically and mentally. He was wounded in Vietnam and then sent back to the states for recovery and he finds that he was even more lost in himself than before.

Paragraph 2:
I give Search and Destroy a 4 out of five stars. I thought the book was very inspirational and taught a very useful lesson. It showed the truths and misfortunes of war and the soldiers that have to face the blood bath that is war. It was a very realistic book, while Rick and the other characters were not real, if I had not have been informed otherwise, I would have thought that Search and Destroy was a true story. My only Complaint is that the ending was kind of bland, it could have used a little more "juice". It felt sort of rushed. All in all it was a fantastic book and I would recommend this book to other people because it teaches a valuable lesson that can be applied to many different aspects of life.

LINK: https://goo.gl/images/WqIKP4

Element 2: Analysis of Book Review

It’s 1969. Rick Ward is out of high school and realizes he hasn’t experienced anything real in life yet. He wants to be a writer, and enlisting in the army might give him something to write about—brave heroes, tough realities and truths found close to the action, at the heart of darkness. He wants to publish a first novel and send a copy to his former girlfriend and sign it, “With love, from the guy you didn’t believe in.” By the time he fights in Vietnam and returns, he’s not exactly sure what truth he has found, but he does know that his war experience is about the people—about Trang and Whiley and J.D., actual people—not everyone’s vague conceptions of war. Simply written and taut, like the novel Rick might write, Hughes’s work will appeal to a wide audience. It’s a war story and a coming-of-age tale of a boy seeking real experience and a way to make a difference in the world. A solid companion to Philip Caputo’s photo-essay 10,000 Days of Thunder(Sept. 2005).

My summary of the book review:
That book review does a great job of summarizing the book. It explains that Rick is just out of high school and he realizes that he hasn't experience enough in life yet. He wants to experience things but he doesn't think he can until his girlfriend confronts him about it. His father kicks him out and then he realizes what he much do, he must join the army. Once hes in Vietnam he doesn't seem to find what adventure he has been looking for, nor does he know who he truly is, even after he is wounded in Vietnam. Although the book review was very informative, I did not learn anything new.

Element 3: Universal Theme

Paragraph 1:
The universal theme in this book is to not make quick decisions based on a temporary problem. Rick wants to go to war to have an amazing adventure and to find out how to be a man and who he truly is but he soon realizes that that is probably not the brightest idea. Despite being warned by the man at the recruit office, he decided to go through with the enlistment. "I'm warning you young man, many young men just like you come in here asking for adventure and then they never come back" (Hughes, 27). The lesson for everyone to learn here is that you shouldn't make a huge, potentially dangerous decision just because you have a temporary problem that will be worked out on its own.

Paragraph 2:
This is a universal theme because everyone no matter where you are from or who you are or what you look like, knowing this information can help you tremendously in the long run. People of our time tend to make rash decisions. Making rash decisions have, for the most part, a much harsher effect then it would have years ago, even if its not that much harder, it is much different. Look at some of the consequences of rash decisions made my people because of a temporary or minor problem these days such as running a stop light and causing a deadly crash, Or doing drugs because your depressed and overdosing on them. Rash decisions can hurt you and that is why the universal theme of this book is a very important one.

Paragraph 1:
The character I choose is Rick. Rick is the main character of the novel and has a tremendous effect of the novel. He shows the reader that thinking things through is important but more importantly he shows bravery. " I never thought of myself as a brave person and honestly, I still don't. This whole war thing is still kind of a blur to me" ( Hughes, 184). Rick was a very private person as far as his emotions go, that's why he kept a journal that he wrote in whenever he got the chance to.

Paragraph 2:
He defiantly effected other characters by saving some of their lives. He saved numerous live and was injured doing it. He defiantly displayed great friendship to the men in his ward even though he only considered a few of them friends. He also displays bravery. Rick my not have found out who he was, but he sure found bravery. " I didn't know where I was until a bigger woman was calling my name. When I barley opened my eyes she told me what had happened to me and that I would be okay but I would be in the hospital for quite some time" (Hughes, 175).

How do I relate to Rick?:
I can't relate to Rick a whole lot because we are from two different sides of the country, he experiences abuse and some of the things he has struggled with I have never struggled with. However, i can relate to him because he joins the military. Military is something I have been heavily considering for a while now. I took this book very seriously and really took mental notes on how Rick felt throughout his journey. " I sat and thought about whether or not I was making the right decision. I thought about just not going back to turn the papers in to the recruit center but then I realized that it was the best thing for me right now" (Hughes, 34). Rick, the soilder has helped make my decision a little bit easier.
